If it is distilled, how would you get those tastes? Especially it's like 50 percent alcohol.

-Its Chinese, I could have been drinking grassy dirt water with rubbing alcohol mixed in.

Or the aromatics come over in the distilling process. It's not like booze has no flavor to it.

Or the grass and dirt were added as adjuncts later in the process.

I ran across a mention of Jägermeister today, and it got me interested in trying it again to see if my opinion's changed. I think it sucks, but haven't had it in 30 years. I like ouzo a good bit. I also have an akvavit that's heavy on the anis, and I like it a lot. I read sambuca's pretty sweet, and I don't see that as an improvement on ouzo.

The worst thing I've ever drank(updated since this thread was created) is ginger brandy. My daughter wanted it to make a mixed drink, and it tastes fucking horrible, and ruins anything it touches. Highly medicinal, and not in a good way. I'd rather do shots of listerine :^S

I used to roadie for a band in the 70s. The best set they ever did was after they each had a shot of Southern Comfort. Why they had the bottle I will never know.
I think Janis drank it. I consider that a recommendation. However, AFAIK, I've never tasted it.

err no, it's one of their premium products. Yes, it is possible to get good products out of PRC.

I have a collection of liqueurs. I have bought quite a few, especially the more famous ones, many of which were "invented" likely centuries ago. I was intrigued by reading a book I found at local library, "Spirits & Liqueurs" by Rosalind Cooper (I found and bought my own copy, locally). I have also dabbled in making my own, with varying success. I haven't hated anything I concocted. You can start with vodka, seems to me it doesn't matter if it's high quality, it's the relative blandness and the 80 proof nature of it. Sugar is a very common ingredient.

Some 10 years ago or so I made some wild blackberry liqueur. A quart or two. Quite delicious. Still have most of it.

Truly, I usually don't think about alcohol. There was a time not long ago when I'd have a ~3 ounce glass of cab with dinner, but I stopped. Not a decision, I just stopped without a thought. I haven't had a sip of wine for almost a year, I guess. I have sipped some Irish Cream from time to time in the last year. 1/2 ounce max.

I mainly drink in the winter. Alcohol goes well with cool weather. Had a glass of Ardbeg tonight. Talking about Islay whisky got me in the mood. Since May, I could count the alcoholic drinks I've had on one hand. I didn't even do any G&Ts this year. By the time November gets here, I'll probably average a drink every other day. That'll go til it gets warm again.

-Ok, but I got this from Total Wines. It could have been anything. I'll take a picture and post next time I'm there and if this Motai is available. Small orange bottle.

Edit: here it is, the culprit.

Go buy it and drink it.

Not a black licorice/anise fan?
I love ouzo. And Jagermeister. And absinthe. One of these days I probably ought to try sambuca.
Nope, it gives me that “hurl” gag reaction.

I forgot to add Jameson Irish whiskey to my first list. That shit is nasty!

Alcoholic beverages I've concocted:

I made plum wine one year. This was in the 1970's. IIRC, it didn't keep really well. I guess it turned to vinegar after a while. I had it in quart or liter bottles I got one way or another, the plums grew in the yard.

I made a citrus based liqueur. I tried to duplicate coffee liqueurs, Kahlua, basically. I still have some. It wasn't as good as Kahlua, but not too bad. I made a citrus based liqueur. It was OK. Probably still have some in the cabinet. And the blackberry liqueur, which is quite good. I guess it was just vodka, crushed and sieved wild blackberries and sugar.

I've never tried brewing. I heard it's easy.

Alcoholic beverages have been around since before human history began. Things ferment and you have ethyl alcohol. Fruit, to start with. Grains in water.

Drunk squirrels are fun. I've seen them a couple times in the wild, and a bunch of times on video. Last one I saw was a weird time of year. I think it was late August maybe September. I was wondering what he got into. Shouldn't have been much fruit around. Maybe peaches.

Yeah, fruit falls to the ground and ferments. A Squirrel eats it and becomes intoxicated. Could happen in my yard, so many plums fall to the ground. But I have no idea about drunk varmints having eaten them. This all happened with humans and grapes millennia ago.

That is probably the cheapest Mautai I have seen lol. I don't drink so that is not happening.

wiki says their revenue reached 10.5B USD in 2018...

-Yeah didn't realize the price could go as high as several thousand dollars a bottle. Guess I'll never discover what "good" Baijiu tastes like, and from the sound of it neither will you.

You can try kaoliang, which is also a baijiu made with sorghum. Much more reasonable in price. Maotai is so expensive because it has been associated with the rise of CCP. I doubt it's worth that much otherwise.

I remember when I was a kid I came home from playing ball outside and was thirsty. Saw a glass with water and gulped it down... Except it was 58 kaoliang my uncle poured for himself... Puked my guts out.

I quit drinking 33 years ago, but I remember a drink that we encountered at Whistler in BC called the Rock and Roll Sledge

Southern comfort
Sloe Gin

Nothing else
It was pretty wretched as I recall.

Huh, Jameson is very smooth and fairly light in flavor, seems weird to see someone regard it as nasty.

I'm not a fan of Jameson(regular expression). It's popularity mystifies me. I don't find it repulsive, but it's got nothing to recommend it either. Tastes like it's about 95% column still whiskey, and the main flavor's "alcohol".

After spending a couple weeks in Italy limoncello has risen right up the list. Tastes like you are drinking pure Lysol.

I think it's mostly the smoothness, I wouldn't buy the regular stuff, but did buy and enjoy the Caskmates stout version.

IPAs. The whole lot of them. Like drinking dirt when you expect a beer. Yes, even that one you think tastes good to people who don't like IPAs. That one especially tastes like shit.
I don't know what kind of dirt you're eating that tastes like IPAs. While I love the non-juicy/non-hazy IPAs that aren't too malty, I think the "deer piss" comparison is far more accurate than "dirt". Not that I've had deer piss, but it seems much more likely to carry IPA-type flavors than plain old dirt.
