I've got a maxtor 45 gig 7200 that i got for real cheap, look at the deals forum but i can't get it installed. Windows ME recognizes it under system devices, and i can see it in the bios also. But i'm not sure how im spossed to format a new HD in windows so i can see its contents and begin using it. The software the comes with it Maxblast?? hangs on the checking system config screen. Im not sure if its cause of my a7v mobo, i heard that can be kinda problematic. Any information on how to get it up and running, or working with the mobo's ata 100 controller working with it would be apreciated

im guessing it needs to be partitioned and formated.
Boot up with a win98 startupdisk, and use fdisk on it, then format it

If you are starting fresh on that A7V then you need to put the HD in a ATA66 slot. You can not use the ATA100 until you have loaded the promise drivers into a loaded OS. After that you can switch over to the ATA100 slot and set it to boot off of it in the bios.

Install the HD on the ata66, set it to boot off of the IDE in the bios, and put the windows disk in the CD tray. It should boot off the disk and allow you to format and install. You also can boot off a floppy (if handy), format, then install.
