Whats the story w/ IBM OEM Drives? 75gxp

Bought a 61.4gb 75GXP OEM drive, sure enough it's bad 🙁

wont finish scandisk or defrag, and when virus scan program scans my hard drive it locks up....followed by loud clicking...anyways...its bad no question about that

I have been told several different stories about IBMs OEM policy. First they wouldnt support them, then someone said they warranty them for a year, I've heard they warranty them for 3 years also, I hope they warranty them a little now 🙂

Anyone know FOR ABSOLUTE CERTAIN if they do or not?

Not all OEMs have the same warranty... which is why you must always read what kind of OEM warranty it has before buying it...

I'd check with the vendor first then IBM... maybe the vendor will send you an exchange.

Culex, at the time I bought it, I bought it understanding that IBM doesnt warranty OEM drives, so there was nothing to investigate...but I'll see if I can find it on their website

Go to the IBM site and find/download Disk Fitness Test. It is then installed on a bottable floppy and will fix most any IBM drive except one that has a mechanical defect. I have resurrected a couple of them that were considered DOA. RUn the long program . . . takes many hours. It literally rebuilds the drive complete with low level formatting.

I had that same problem with an old IBM 15gig UDMA66 hard drive. Had it for about 6 months and one night it locked up in scandisk and started making LOUD clicking sounds. Im now wary of IBM hard drives.

Maybe call the IBM HDD hotline at 888-IBM-5214, 8:00 a.m - 7:00 p.m. CST. Give them the serial number and they'll give you the story. Somewhere on their website you can do the same thing.

I saw a post that there is much confusion over this. OEM is OEM....it comes in a new PC and is under warrantee by the PC maker. Then there is retail, and "bare". I think bare carries the same warrantee as retail. Call them and see.

IBM OEM drives DO NOT carry warranties, you have to get warranty through the OEM the drive was sold to, most OEMs will not warranty because it didnt come with their PC. Only "bare" drives and retail packages carry the 3 year IBM warranty.

I think the whole confusion about this is that the term "bare drive" and "OEM drive" is used loosely.

Alot of the etailers are marking it down as OEM... which alot of people substitude as "bare hardware only"...

That's what I use also... granted it may not be correct according to this thread but it's a habit and doubt I'll focus correcting something like that since half the world seems to do it too.

Either way, bottom line:

Lots of people use the term "oem" and "bare hardware" loosely... so... ah hell tired of explaining.. hope you catch my drift 😛

People get confused with "bare" and "OEM", they're the same hardware, without any kind of package(besides static bag), and no bundle software, screws, cables, etc... but OEM drives are sold to OEMs like Dell and Micron while bare drives are sold to end users. The difference is bare drives carry IBM warranty and OEM carries OEM warranty, IBM is NOT responsible for OEM drives as a matter of fact.

I replaced a bare drive with IBM, no problem. I too thought it was oem. If you call in to there warranty desk and let the know the drive is dead, they will ask for the serial number. They will also send a new one out the same day, and you can use there packaging to send yours back.
