What's the status on PS3 and playing AVI files?

I did a quick google search but only found updates from 2007 about petitioning for PS3's to support AVI files.

I recently bought a friend a PS3 as a wedding present and wanted to share some movies with him. To my surprise, it didn't support AVI files (my Xbox360 does!).

Are there any updates planned? If not, what's the best way to convert AVI files into something that the PS3 can support?


Any help is appreciated!
 
WMV stream OK for me, but I have issues with DivX. It won't stream properly from my DNLA NAS. Music and WMV are OK. Frustrated with DivX at this point.

WMV work for you on the PS3? Do you know the format of the audio streams? I've got some WMV HD files and my PS3 can see files and play the video just fine, but there is no audio. They work just fine on the 360. I believe the audio is DD AC-3, but I'd have to double check.
 
Using Windows Media Player 11 (Vista) and the media sharing feature, I have all of my divx/xvid .avi files playing through my ps3. Audio is usually encoded as mp3 and the video differs from file to file.

I have not tested many .h264 videos.

It was an edit of some orginal footage of mine and I used Studio 8 to make it. Check you have enabled WMA audio playback in system settings. This is a pre-req for WMV.
