I pay a bit more than you but I've always wondered why they deserve a tip and when this practice started.

Really depends. if im sober and its just to and from the airport or something than its usually a dollar or two. Recently ive run into annoying and lazy cabbies and i dont tip them. The last two have just sat in drivers seat and popped the trunk/back for me ot put my bags in (with 3 or 4 bags mind you) and dint offer to help. The last i told him where i wanted to go and he didnt have a clue. So i give him directions (freakin simple in SD...get on i-5 north, take 163, get off at friars road east, not complicated). He looks at me like im crazy and instead goes a much longer route. I was going to fight that but the guy i was taking the cab with just paid the fare. Really it was like 5 bucks more than the shorter way.

Now when i am drunk.....god i think last time it was like $11 bucks and i just gave him a 20. Time before that pretty sure my friend paid him and then i paid him so he made like three times what the fare was in tips (since we tipped too).

Rule of thumb for me is if they are friendly and get me from point a to point b efficiently and quickly and offer help if i have bags....ill give em a decent tip. If they just go A to B its a smaller tip. if they try to screw me they get nothing.

Their service is to get me from point A to point B. Why would I pay them more for doing EXACTLY the job that they're supposed to be doing their best in the first place?

I usually tip the cabbies up to the next dollar because they are all scumbags in my city.

Thank you Dwight Shrute! "I did however tip my urologist because I could not pulverize my own kidney stones"

They do not deserve a tip just for doing their job. That's what a paycheck is for.

Now, if they were entertaining or knew some awesome time-saving shortcut or something, THEN you should tip.

People need to stop fucking tipping just for the sake of tipping. Holy christ.

Hey, I posted in your thread, you should tip me too.

I hope you don't tip a waitress, a doorman, valet boy, mailman, trashman, supermarket cashier, Home Depot employee, McDonald's employee, or anyone else that provides a service for you either.

Never taken a cab in the states. Took a couple in Syndey Australia. Seriously feared for my life in those cab rides. Crazy mofo drivers  Did not tip those guys.

I hope you don't tip a waitress, a doorman, valet boy, mailman, trashman, supermarket cashier, Home Depot employee, McDonald's employee, or anyone else that provides a service for you either.

Waitress: Yes, if she goes out of her way to make sure I'm taken care of. No, that does not include simply taking my order and delivering my food. It's the things in between which are not REQUIRED of her service that I will judge when I decide if I'm giving a gratuity.

Doorman: No, probably not. But I've never had one so I can't say for sure.

Valet: Never needed one. I'm a broke soldier from Canada, I don't go anywhere that requires a valet.

Mailman: Uh, no. Do people actually tip their mailman?

Trashman: Same question. Do people honestly tip these people?

Supermarket Cashier: I'll tip a few cents only because I don't want to carry that shit in my pocket.

Home Depot Employee: No, if I ask for something, it's his job, and his direct purpose of being there, to help me if such a requirement were to arise.

McDonalds: No. Just no.

What I will tip for, however, is:

Bartender: If I'm served with preference, or my tender remembers my drink of choice despite an overwhelming crowd, and serves me in a very timely manner, then yes, I will tip to ensure that service continues.

Servers: I will tip if I'm checked on often, and I find the service to be ABOVE AND BEYOND what is expected.

Key words. Above and beyond what is expected.
