What's the standard in screen resolution?

Is it 800x600 ?

Or can I safely assume that the majority of people have at least 1024x768 ?

I want to enlarge the thumbnails on my site to 150x113 with 5 on each row. It won't work on an 800x600 screen without horizontal scroll bars. However, it fits nicely on a 1024x768 screen.

Depends on the target audience of your webpage. If the site is targetted to somewhat computer/technology saavy 1024*768 would be ok. However, if it is not there still is a significant amount of 800*600 users.

i would guess the minumum "for all my blind" clients is 800..
but everyone else i know is running 1024.....
a few freinds are running 19" monitors are running 1280..
i personally run 2 webpages for 800 and 1024, and a script to get resolution to direct client to correct page...

My site is mostly (~99%) just pics using Gallery.

However, I have faith that my friends are all savvy enough to have a decent monitor.

1024x768 it is.

I use tripple 1600x1200 at home (three 19in crts) and 1152x864 at work (really low end 19in, crappy integrated video wont do 1280x960, I hate 1280x1024, 1600x1200 really blows at 60hz)

That being said ... many of the people work ask me "how do you see whats on your screen" blablabla .... as they are blind and run at the blindingly huge 800x600 res.

I think it would be safe to say, 1024x768 is a good minimum standard if its target audience is computer literate people who are not blind. If it is for the masses, aol users, or blind people ... than i'm sad to say 640x480.

The "standard" way of doing things is to design a site so that it's viewable at 800x600. That way even if someone has a larger resolution, they can view it in a window. However, many people these days have thier res set to 1024x768 or greater (mine is 1280x1024) and view webpages full screen for some stupid reason.

Best thing to do is make your website and get a counter on it that records the person's screen res. Then you can look at your own info and tailor your site to your own customers.

Many people will talk about stats that 8x6 is still the standard because there are some sites that record this info and have millions of hits on them. Problem is these sites never reset themselves so the million of hits on 8x6 could be from 5 years ago and the hits from today would all be in the 10x7 or higher range.

I always go for 1024x768 but I put things in a centered 85% table anyway so there's some buffer so people on 8x6 would still be able to view it wihtout having to scroll sideways at all.

1152x864!! 1024 seems a little too small, but in 1280x1024 i can never read any of the damn text on my desktop. 1152 is the median between the two.. perfection if you will :p

Thought of using %?
Have the images big enough for 5/row at say, 1280x1024, and the make them like 15% of the page width (or if in tables, make thecells that big, the pics should fit perfectly at 100%). It won't be a major network hit even for 800x600 folks. The only downside is getting the measurements right could take longer than just assuming 10x7 or 8x6

i run 1280x1024 on my 21" crt... crank it to 1600x1200 if im spending hours on hours doing photo editing.

but for web design, depending on your target audiance its stil 800x600....

id say 1024x768 should b the standard by the end of this year though
