What's the safest way to pay for something over the internet?

I found a good deal on a Powerbook over the 'net and I'd like to propose to them a very safe way of going about the transaction - moreso so I don't get scammed. What kinds of payment methods or tools are safe to use? The seller mentioned that "We can give you our bank info and you can wire the funds or I can give you Bank of America info and you can make the payment at any Bank of America." Can banks recover wire transferred money due to scams? Can money orders be reversed? Any help would be great.

Cash in a thin, translucent envelope sent by the Postal service. Use a fake return address. For added safety, write "cash enclosed" so the postal workers will know to take extra care of it.

COD sounds good. Do you know offhand which shipping companies do this?
