What's the right way to stop China's development on high-tech?

Maybe the question should be: how to prevent China from stealing other country's high technology?

Trade war or raise tariffs is not the right way. More strict export control, outbound investment control, information access control is the right way.

One suggestion was to do what China does and insist that Chinese companies setting up shop in the US must form joint ventures with American brands and share their ideas. I'm not actually convinced that would get China to change its ways, but it would be interesting to see the outrage as Huawei has to team up with an American company that will suddenly have access to its technology patents.

As everyone know, China is good at copying other country's technology, but they lack the ability of innovation. So if other countries implement a more strict export control, stop sale new products / new equipment / new software / new tools to China, stop update or upgrade their production lines in China, what will happen? I think they will stuck there, just like 1960's, when Russia withdraw from China, China's technology remained the low level for a long time.

America will never beat china in anything ever again. You can just forget about that.

1.3 billion people raised in a far better education system and totally lacking "conservative" idiots to drag down their country.... OP you'll be begging to buy Chinese products instead of your overpriced non-tariffed "Made in USA" garbage in 10 years. You'll be driving a chinese car, using a chinese washing machine... but of course you'll also be wearing US made clothes (probably from Ivanka's clothing line) because those won't be tariffed. LOL.

That's the same silly thing said about the Japanese 40 years ago.

China restrict their people to access facebook, youtube, but they never forbid them to access the academic website or free software website, such as mysql or php. Why? They got huge profit from it and they never pay for it.

Why America government don't do something oppositely, forbid all IP from China to access academic website or free software website, just let them vistit facebook or youtube. haha.

Facebook and YouTube monetize american citizens lives for the profit of shareholders. Maybe china doesn't like their populace being ingenuous slaves to huge Orwellian multinational corporations?

What advantage do you think Facebook or YouTube gives US citizens over the Chinese?

Nobody pays for free software. That's the whole point of it being free.

Are you sure it's in your interest to keep China poor and underdeveloped?

Seems a difficult problem to me. Too much 'cheating' causes instability and resentment, but it seems to me you have to accept a certain amount of 'leakage' of knowledge and tech as the price of doing (rather profitable) business with a country that still has large numbers of very poor people. It's not as if the US pulled itself up by its own bootstraps and made no use of knowledge developed by others.

Interesting idea.. All the Chinese I've met in my state of California seem to be way more conservative than the rest here... Wonder if they become more liberal outside of CA?

You can thank your greedy corporations and their financial/marketing wizards who started this race to the bottom and can't see past the next financial quarter, their bought and paid for politicians, brainwashed consumers buying based on cheapest price, liberal entertainment media that promotes the sports player, actor, rock/rapp, celebrities in general while deriding the intellectual and intelligent long before the religious right of today,

sad and funny to see Americans getting their asses kicked by cultures and societies that still compete, prize education and intellectualism and don't believe everyone is entitled to a trophy (high paying job),

because in the globalized competitive sphere there is no affirmative action or safe spaces to save you no matter how much of a special snowflake, self entitled social justice warrior that believes they can be anything they want while someone else does the heavy lifting for them,
especially when you pay lip service to wage/labor issues while seeking out the cheapest prices in the race to the bottom.

There's a certain irony to this given that you generally lean to the right... you know, the camp that's censoring and otherwise hindering science programs, gutting public education and entrenching corporate monopolies.

The Democrats need reform too, but they at least respect science, education and actual market competition.

When you're behind, you don't innovate, you catch up. That's what China has been doing for the past 50 years, it's been catching up, and it almost caught up. Give it 10-30 years and they will start innovating.

It must really suck to live in your head. I don't think I could go through life permanently defeated and blaming others for my failures.
You don't have to change the world, all you need to do is keep your little corner of it tidy, and encourage those around you to do the same. Every day brings a new victory.

It's not like the big money behind the GOP has been doing that, is it? They're changing the world to suit themselves every chance they get.

Get together with the rest of the industrialized world who has the same problem with China and implement a technology embargo.

I'm not following you. My comment was a personal note on the fellows world view, not anything to do with the GOP.
Just to comment on the statement itself, all big business manipulates the public at every opportunity, they also spend vast amounts of money on lobbyists to change the rules to increase their profits. Big business is to some extant everyone's enemy. This is where I agree with tight regulation, large company's can never be trusted.

I disagreed with the "just keep your hut tidy & be grateful to have it" routine. "Let the Job Creators provide" has led us to where we are today.

We can't stop China's development of high tech. It's much too late for that. If we want to compete we'll have to up our game with better education, better leadership & more investment. It's not like even our own Job Creators will invest in America when more lucrative opportunities beckon so we need to do it some other way.

China only has a few star companies like Huawei or Dajiang. Most of their companies don't have technical advantages. But the gap is narrowing. It's time for American government to do something.

Easy, stop exploiting Chinese labor to make our products

Stop making newest product in China. Stop upgrading production lines in China. Stop selling new software, instrument, equipment, tools to China. But the old product, old production line that already have been moved to there should be continued. Then American corporations can enter China's market and keep technology advantages at same time.

Everyone knows, the update of technology is very fast today. If American corporation don't give them opportunity to access new product and new technology, they will be slaves forever.
