What's the proper way to dispose of used batteries? Is it environmentally friendly to pitch them in the landfill or is there some other way I'm supposed to dispose of them? Someone saw me throwing them in the garbage and told me that we shouldn't do that but, didn't tell me the "right" way to get rid of them?

I think if its just small like remote control batteries its ok to just put them in the bin but for things like car batteries i think just take them to a local waste disposal site

Depends on your location. Many places have a Hazardous Waste Disposal program, and you're SUPPOSED to take all your dry cell batteries there for proper disposal. But in reality, almost no one does, because it's too time consuming to go through all that to get rid of a couple of batteries.

Mine go right into the trash. I'm not driving out to the dump for a couple batteries.

Hers's an idea. Why don't you save them up.

"Oh who cares it's not going to impact me". Maybe you should think of what to do for the greater good.

Exactly. Who the heck would make one trip to the dump each time their tv remote went dead?

I keep a large plastic container (whey protein) in my work room. Once a year or so, I take them to the dumb with other large items.

Don't throw them into the trash like a douche. Be smart about it.

I make sure to throw my batteries in the pristine rivers of the Cascades, where all the happy fishes swim and the deer hop to lap up a sip of fresh water.

"Recycling" of alkaline batteries by disposal companies comes down to cost. It is usually cheaper to send batteries to a RCRA subtitle C secure landfill than to actually recycle them. So even if you think you are doing a "good" thing for the environment, the disposal company is still going to do what is in its own best interests when it comes to methods of disposal. Those who operate waste disposal facilities are not environmentalists by any stretch of the word. They comply with the rules and regulations set forth by local, state, and the federal government, and that is it.

I think the local walmart parking lot must be our local battery recycling place. Those things are laying all over the place

I take things like UPS batteries to a store that does battery disposal. Pretty much all other household batteries get tossed in the trash.

I thought Bestbuy or Circuit City had a collection bin for used batteries and used cellphones? I need to check it out again. I have some old batteries to get rid.

Around here the curbside recycling program takes them. Just throw them in their own bag in the red bin, and you're set. They even take rechargables.

Household batteries are now recyclable curbside.
Sizes: A-D, 9-volt cells, Flashlight, Toy, Radio, Smoke Detector.
Lantern batteries 6-9 volt. Rechargable: NiCd, NiMH, and Lithium Ion.
Small button cells: Calculators, Hearing aid, and Watch.

Radio Shack will recycle rechargeable batteries.

And don't you all know you can get paid for car batteries? Autozone gives $10 if you buy the replacement battery there. I'm not sure how much other stores are.
