What's the proper response to "Hi, how are you doing?"

If someone asks how you're doing, ask em "Do you honestly care?" and watch the reaction

almost the exact same thing back.

no one really cares how u'r doing, so why bother.

usually either "pretty good, you?" or "not too bad, yourself?"

"Pretty good, and you?" if I'm feeling overly peppy, otherwise just "fine".

I was at Walmart the other day, and I got a penny back for change. The cashier said something hokey, like, "Penny for your thoughts...interesting thoughts?" There were other people in line and I said, "You don't want to know...they're sick thoughts."

I shouldn't have said that..
