I sent a computer to a friend of mine by Fed-Ex. It was damaged on the transit (The Cd roms fell inside). I am trying to figure what is wrong. When it's powered on it does nothing except the fans (CPU and system) come on and the power LED lights. But there is no other activity, no video, no beeps. Then I instructed her to disconnet the hard drive, CD roms (CDRW, DVD)and it does the exact same thing. Both the times it can be powered on using the power switch but can't be shut down. To shut ti down she had to close the black power switch at the back. I think the memory is bad. Is there anyhting else that might have gone bad? like the power supply or the mobo? what do you guys think? It does the same thing when the memory is removed. Just the fans and power swtich. One more thing. It can be restarted with with the rest switch.
It's a ECS K7S5A mobo, with athlon 950 on it.

If everything was working fine before you sent it, then something came loose.
It's possible that the motherboard is shorting to the case. This could have been caused by the case being stressed and causing the board to shift.

I would just think something loosened up during the tranfer.

One of the first things I would do is check to make sure your components are seated correctly. Starting with the video card. Take it out , put it back an make sure it's set in the slot well.

If that doesn't work, try the others cards.................sound card, modem, etc...

I had an ABIT Bh6 motherboard that would do something similar to what yours is. But it was for other reasons , it would just short out sometimes if I moved the case, or opened it. Drove me nuts. No other motherboard has done that.

If what you're doing doesn't work, the only thing I would do, is start from scratch. Take out the parts and see if the computer starts with just the video card attached (no other items.....no sound card, modem, other peripherals etc...(gotta leave your hard drive attached though🙂..........till I nailed down what was causing it.

If you think a memory stick is bad, just run the computer with one stick you think is okay, along with the other things I mentioned

yea i agree get them to remove all the cards and reseat them. the ram also. Sounds like fed X went bowling with it

thanks for all your help. I tried to put the RAM in the other slot. Same problem. I will try the other things tomorrow and let you guys know.
