In regards to the CC interest: At there creation it was known that there was going to be fraud....the rates were determined based on having fraud and also still making a profit. If you were around BBS's and the small parts of the internet up in the 80's you learned that carding items was simple. Many 'kids' made tens of thousands of dollars that way....who knows what adults were doing....the thing is they cracked down on the fraud and some of the CC's lowered there rates, now it's hard to card stuff, but not impossible.

Also these people that complain about waiting in line at discount shops....you know what to do, go to the boutique and pay top dollar....hell almost anything can be ordered mail order now do that if you don't want to wait, sign or show ID.

If I am in a discount store I am hoping to get a decent price, otherwise I'd go to the mall or the private shop. If that means waiting then I wait. If these shops had 10 - 20 workers I doubt the prices would be as low.

wow, kudos to your wife for deal with the situation well. Also, her manager is awesome for backing her up- I can't tell you how many times I tried to follow the rules, just for the manager to turn around and make me look stupid.

I don't give a crap what CC companies' policies are, how you sign your card or what...

NO ONE has the right to insult you on a level like the OP said his wife was for any reason.

I hope bad things happen to her. I hope she winds up in a situation where her racism and stereotyping bite her in her ass.

I wish MORE places would ask to see IDs. I use a CC for just about every purchase, and imo its pretty scary that I can use my CC for $500 payments without having to show my ID. I'd much rather have to show my ID at every purchase than go to the trouble of getting charges on a stolen CC dropped or even worse have to pay them.

I sign my card, "SEE ID".

Truth by told, that does not mean anything. You MUST sign the back of the credit card. You can sign it with your name followed by SEE ID, but people thinking that 'SEE ID' is good enough is more of an urban myth.

There's no clause in any of the Credit Card terms & agreement that you MUST sign your credit card. On all my CC terms & agreement documents, they always say "sign the card" OR "use the card" will activate your agreement. I know about the fact that merchant is not supposed to check your ID. But it's my choice, as the card holder, to let the merchants know that they should check anyone trying to use the CC. Urban myth or not urban myth, I rather someone fall short trying to use my credit card than having deal with all fraud charges if and when I lost my card.

It's your choice...you don't have to sign the back, but if you don't, I have to check your ID.

See, I thought this was true (or rather, used to be maybe?) but my current Visa says in big bold letters on the back of it "This card is not valid unless signed"

We are getting a little off my topic :)

I know about the rules and how for many cards the ID request is against policy....

However, what is the big deal? I, if anyone, here has more reason to worry about showing my info than most, but I don't make a big deal about it...if I was that paranoid I'd use cash or debit card+pin (I normally use my debit except for purchases I want the protection the CC offers, which I then go home and payoff with my debit card ;)).

All I know is I'd be out of a job more than likely if that lady pulled that crap on me :)

Visa, Mastercard, and Amex all specifically do not want merchants to check ID. It is a barrier to people using the cards and they want people to use the cards as much as possible. Since the card user is protected, it makes no real difference if someone steals your card and uses it. The store should be protected if they bounce the purchase off of the electronic database and if they check the signature.

I usually just show my drivers license and get on with it, but it is actually against the general policy of the card companies.

I have had Best Buy be requested to check my ID by the card company when I bought my big screen TV, but that was different.

In general, stores have no right to see my picture ID which was my address on it and other personal information.

I believe on the card it says "NOT VALID WITHOUT SIGNATURE"

Read your Terms & Agreement leaflets. I am pretty sure it will say differently. It's just like that little sticker on the new credit card they send you. It tells you that you must call the number to activate card. But you may activate the card simply by just using it.

1. The customer was a complete bitch.

2. If your store wants to see my ID for a credit card purchase, I may do the first time if I really want the item, but I will not be back. If I wanted to show you ID, I would've written a check.

When my dad bought a $9.99 CD with a credit card from circuit city last time they asked for his ID. He wasn't happy about it but he didn't make a scene.

I think it's rude if it's something that's very cheap but if you're buying $500 worth of merchandise then an ID check wouldn't be out of line.

i didn;t think u could use your CC as your ID, even if it has a pic of you, cuz is it a recogized from ID, i know at the GNC i own we don't allow it, a license, passport or something LEGAL is what we use, it might be good for that store to post it somewhere, so when u have a problem you just point to that, thats what we do.

Why would it be rude? Asking to check your ID does not mean that they're suspicious, they're just following policy. Why would the store put something that says, for $X amount check ID and anything less then dont' check ID. It's much easier if they check everyones ID, less confusion. It takes less than 30 seconds to take out your driver's license but saves a bunch of people from credit card fraud.

yeah you can dispute with CC companies, which is a royal pain in the ass compared to showing your ID.
