horizontal messenger bag = fine, especially if it's any kind of leather/canvas mix.

vertical messenger bag = purse

this is what I carry to work when needed:

practically, a messenger bag is also lighter than a briefcase and you can strap it to your body for semi-long trips. A briefcase would really really suck for a long trip.

Who cares about what other people think. get what works...

So I finally decided on a bag and figured I'd update this thread. I found a local store that carries 5.11 bags, and I spent some time looking around there and settled on this one in sandstone. I've only carried it for a day, but so far it's much better than the laptop bag I was carrying. Has a TON of pockets and I can carry just about anything I need to. They only thing I don't like is it's not quite tall enough to hold regular 8.5x11 sheets of paper. the flap bends like 1/4" of the paper over when closed. It holds any books I want just fine, but I carry sheet music around sometimes for piano/guitar lessons. That's a very minor issue though and I can probably just stick it in a folder and be fine, so all in all I'm verry happy with my purchase. It was on sale too, so a bag that's regular $95 cost me $72 instead. If anybody is looking for a bag, the guy at the store said 5.11 runs a deal this time of year where everything is 20% off, presumably everywhere it's sold.

Anyway, thanks everybody for the replies, even if I did respond a little late...........

Messenger bag,.. or back pack?

Do I want to look like an adult? Or, a high school student?

I'll take the messenger bag.

That was what steered me away from a backpack after looking at them. A messenger bag just looks more professional, IMO.

IDK, I use a backpack. I just looked at the Timbuk2 on Amazon, holy shit. I think I could fit my whole life in that thing. The image of the guy carrying it looks like he slung a sailboat over his shoulder.

I think you could probably fit a dead body in that thing. You might have to fold them over, but probably only one time................

If I needed a man purse I would probably go with the 5.11 bag you picked up. Looks pretty cool.

I really like it. I figured if I'm gonna carry a bag anyway, might as well get one I like. All the Velcro patches are there for various add-ons you can purchase, which is kinda neat. I doubt I'll be adding any patches though.

Here is a cute one for you.

I have one, works well... holds a *lot* of stuff

That's not a bad looking bag, but I didn't want anything really large. That's why I chose the smallest of the 5.11 Rush bags. Its the perfect size for what I carry, I just need a folder for my papers......

Just buy a purse already, ya nancy!

Already did. LMAO
