After having gone through 3 Rio 600 mp3 players in 2 days(2 of them the backlight wouldnt work and the 3rd wouldnt play), I am now looking for a good mp3 player other than a Rio product. What do you guys recommend. The kinds I dont want are the mp3/cd ones or the ones Like the Nomad Jukebox. Looking for a good, small portable unit.

If you aren't going Rio(try the 800), go for a Nomad. CL's Nomad 2 is second only to the Rio500+.🙂

I just went and bought one to try. I really like the fact that it comes with a 64mb Smart Media card-I can use it with my camera as well. I also like the feel of this one-I doesnt feel cheap. The place I got it from also has a Sensory Science 2200 model that looks nice-I never heard of that brand name though. Also they have a compaq one with a $50 dollar rebate. Tough to choose.

Check out Kanguru.com They have a portable HD that plays MP3. You can even use it as a backup HD to store other stuff. Capacities up to 81gigs! Firewire/USB/Cardbus PCMCIA/Parallel connectors. Even a casette adapter for your car.

Have you tried the Samsun YEPP E-64 or 32? Awesome recording quality. Nice long battery life. The Playback is superb compared to the D-Link products I've tested. And I've dropped it so many times it's not even funny. But the good thing is that the casing is metal. Really small, smaller than a deck of cards. Can hold up to 128Mb smart media and internal combined.

i'm using a transcluent teal Rio500 w/ latest firmware and a 64MB flash card for 128MB total memory...

the decoder is one of the best in portable players, it has backlight, equilizer, uses one AA battery and is one of the smaller but nicer looking mp3 players..

another good on is the sensory science rave mp 2000 (they may have better ones out now), tho it lacked a backlight so i went w/ the rio500...

don't get the sensory science clik disc ones...they suck...simply because they use 40mb iomega clik discs...they're larger, they drain your batteries faster and can skip (due to moving parts - relevant to battery draining and skipping)

damn, i just love my mp3 player...the rioport software sucks tho, so i use real jukebox which supports the rio500 and si good (drag n' drop from explorer to realjukebox)

Also check out the latest issue of Maximum PC. It has a pretty good article comparing all the major MP3 players on the market right now. Good stuff.

Well I wasnt satisfied with the amount of music a 64mb will hold and I wasnt going to shell out any more money for a 128mb card so I returned it and bought an Aiwa AM-C80 Minidisc player/recorder-nice unit, very small. Only downsides are that I have to record at playback speed-no high speed usb downloading, and the rechargable "gumpack" battery cost me an arm & a leg.
