What's the point of Steam groups?

If you can't even TALK to the people in the group? You have to friend someone just to ask them if they want to play a game. I'm part of the AT Steam group, and last night I saw several people playing Saints Row the Third, and wanted to play co-op with them, but you have to friend them to even ask! And I'm sure they're getting the friend request like, "Who the fuck is this?"

What's really cool is that when you select a user (that's playing a game you want to play) there's a link on the right side of their profile, under the game that they're currently player, that says "Send a message." That link doesn't do anything! Amazing!

.... So does anyone want to play Saints Row the Third?

I'm kind of surprised that Steam has that ability to open up a chat window with people on your friend's list but that you can't invite people to a group chat(like ICQ or whatever). Or can you do that and I just don't know how?

You can group chat with people on friends list, people who arent on your friends list can still group chat but they need to be on someone in the chats friends list in order to have been invited there in the first place.

They are for the lulz.

For instance, one could set up a Steam group to start a boycott of a game and get quite a lot of people signed up.

Then the game releases and most boycotters are seen playing it.

Good lulz.

You can see if people in the group are playing. I think it's only going to be helpful for games with the open lobby/open server system though.

Admin can set up events. I think we used to do that for the TF2 fight nights. When the event comes up you get a notification.

Much better than Battlelog in which you can't even see when those in your platoon are playing or where.

Yes, you can have group chats in Steam.

Also I think the point of Steam groups is to organize people together with similar interests, so you can set up and play daily, weekly, or bi-weekly matches of your favorite online game, and socialize with people. I don't use groups much myself but I know there are tons of people who rely on them for this very reason.
