And if you smoke taste is out the window anyways as your tastebuds are shot.

I don't think Wasabi/Soysauce overwhelms the taste of Sushi at a... Just gives it an extra kick.

I use it (big fan of Horshradish)

Heck, one of the reasons why I like Sushi so much is Wasabi itself. Without the Wasabi it's just not the same.

Same reason why you don't put steak sauce on steaks. I want to taste what I'm eating, not cover it up.

Depends on where you're having the sushi. If I'm eating a high end omakase then I will have the sushi "clean" but if I'm at the local corner sushi place, I'm breaking out the soy sauce and wasbi as it's usually not the highest quality fish and probably underseasoned on top of that.

I find this kind of food snobbery amazingly retarded. Sometimes I want a plain steak, sometimes I want a nice sauce with it (home made). In both cases I certainly can "taste what I'm eating" as I am eating the sauce as well.

Sooner or later I am certain this BS is going to result in me reading "oh I never put sauce on my pasta, I want to taste what I'm eating. In fact I don't own a single condiment and all my recipes consist of 1 item."

Heh, or mustard on a hot dog, mayo on a sandwich, syrup on pancakes, etc. Condiments are good, people.

And I seem to recall reading that actual Japanese sushi eaters do not eat the wasabi with the sushi itself. They use it between pieces, along with pickled ginger, as a palette cleanser.

At a good restaurant you definitely don't need to add wasabi to most things and probably don't need soy sauce. The sushi chefs will already put in what they consider the appropriate amount of wasabi and seasoning.

At most places? I'm going to need both.

Anecdotal (n=14), but my entire -in-law family eats wasabi with sushi. My wife mixes it in the soy sauce.

Wasabi is for heat, and to get the bad taste of raw fish and seaweed out of your mouth.

Soy Sauce is just to get the bad taste of raw fish and seaweed out of your mouth.

I just use a bit of wasbi/soysauce mixture to kill some of the parasites/bacteria on the raw fish. But I do prefer to each it without the mixture.

I TOTALLY agree!

Just a few drops of soy sauce or a dab of wasabi will over power the sushi. Might as well get some tofu, dip it, and save some money.

I would say what is the point of sushi at all? I really really tried to like it, but I can't suppress the gag reflex.

No.

Tofu is terrible whatever you do with it. Never have I eaten a dish and thought "Hmmmmm, I wish they would take the main ingredient out of this and substitute it for tofu" and I bet no sane, right thinking people have either

I've had chocolate pudding pie where the pudding was replaced with silken tofu; it was shockingly palatable (I hate tofu).

I only tolerate tofu in miso soup. And even then too much is horrid.

in asian cuisine tofu is rarely used as a substitute for anything. it's a main ingredient in dishes designed specifically for it. not saying you'll like those dishes either, but using tofu as a meat substitute is just a bad idea and does not reflect its potential. i do admit that it's an acquired taste, like cheese.

ordinary tofu is no more an acquired taste than ordinary cheese is, from a culturally neutral perspective. the strong, fermented types are comparable to "some" cheeses yes, but we aren't talking about those.
