What's the point of showing your Costco membership at the door?

I don't get that part, you need a membership to pay at the checkout anyway. Why do you need to show it at the door to go in? It seem pretty easy enough to sneak in anyway on the backs of groups or go in from the exit which I've done once because we needed a straw for a smoothie. I'm not a member so enlighten me but I've visited many times with friends who are.

I think it's mostly to prevent people from getting through the door without realizing that you need a membership. You'd end up with people walking in, filling up carts, and then getting angry when the person at the checkout tells them that they can't buy their stuff without a membership card.

Checking as they go in the door gives the store the chance to send people over to the membership desk before they get into the store. Before I got my card I asked if we could go in and look at the kind of stuff they had and they let me go in. It's not like they're trying to keep non-members out of the store, they just want to make it clear you need a membership to be able to buy things.

To prevent runs on the free samples. This is the main reason anyone goes to Costco. Why give out free samples to those that can't buy the product?

To make members feel special. And to annoy the crap out of people who have to dig through their wallet.

But mostly to make members feel special. Since they dont check closely at the door you could easily have a fake card or expired card. They would never know. Its the check at the cash register which really matters.
I go there all the time for pizza and soda using my expired card. Great deal.

LOL! Costco is so retarded.

Cunning business plan though. Take advantage of all the wealthy retards.

Just to make sure you don't fill up the cart and forget your card, and probably to prevent kiddies from going in to eat free food. I'm fine with it.

As for prices...uuuuuh, come to places here where a fucking eggplant is 2.69 per eggplant. Costco prices are good. They don't beat local ethnic groceries though.

It's to stop those free loaders who come in for lunch.

$50 a year for a year full of free lunches is pretty darn good :p a Costco membership is the best thing a poor/homeless person could get, haha... that is just for the free samples... if they abuse the return policy for food, they can eat like kings (i heard a story where one jerk returned a whole wedding cake or something, by returning one slice and saying it was horrible)

Membership has its privileges. Admission happens to be one of them.

For the exact same brand, yes, the discount is not that much, if any. But their Kirkland Brand products are usually a LOT cheaper than name brands, and are usually just re-branded products of the major brands.

I just walk in the store like I'm either distracted or like as if I'm on a mission to buy something.. I totally dismiss those that "guard" the store because the inconvenience of having to pull that crap out of my wallet is infuriating.

At the Costco near my house you don't even need a card to get into the food area. Or they don't care. I go all of the time and I just walk in the exit and never get stopped.

Because you have to pay a subscription to a store, to save money on deals. You have to purchase quite a lot at Costco to actually make the subscription worth your while.

I'd rather just go to Safeway where I don't have to pay a subscription to be allowed to shop around.

My neighbor shops at costco. She's a single lady living by herself. She buys in bulk to "save money". Then she ends up throwing out half the shit she buys because she can't eat it before it goes bad

I wonder if it is to keep competitors from shopping their prices without buying a membership first. Some 15 years ago before I dumps BB as an employee, we'd be sent out to the competitor's stores to shop their prices. No way the likes of BB would afford their employees to shop Costco under the membership game.
