I consider the concept of life after death to be more of a threat than a promise. If you don't believe in life after death, then there is no reason to fear death or be apprehensive about dieing. If you do believe in life after death, then you have to worry all your life about what kind of life you are going to have after you die.

Simple.
It can be seen two ways. Its good that it keeps people doing something bad. But it is also used to control people's actions which a lot of times is not in the best interest of the person.
It has been speculated that religion was invented to control people. If this is true it can be a bad thing, but is it necessarily a bad thing?
I don't think its bad to believe in a religion. Its bad when its the primary reason to believe in it. I mean, if you didn't believe in life after death, then it shouldn't matter what your actions are in your current life. What I'm trying to say is, your actions shouldn't be because of the way you will live in the your after life, but, rather it should be based on how you and others around you will live currently. Sorry, if that doesn't make any sense.

If you believe that a thread entitled "What's the point of religion?" isn't flamebait you are:

A) A moron
B) Clueless
C) You know it's flamebait and are just a troll
D) All of the above.

I pick D in regards to you. Thank you and have a nice day.

We religious people believe in it just to confound you. Or, to put it another way, there must be something to religion, otherwise you wouldn't bother to ask about it.

I'm going to go with something completely different than most and say that it attempts to explain the unknown. How we came to be, what's the meaning to our life, etc. Thinking about it, What happens after death is also something unknown, so it ties that in as well.

Is it because we can't face our own mortality so we assure ourselves of a life after death?

And YES, I know good people who are atheist.
Chairman Mao said "religon is the opiate of the masses".

Well, religion is different for each person. Some use it as a social gathering, others seek answers to life's many questions (to which religion doesn't seem to have but "just believe and all will be well"), to assure that souls do go somewhere after death, to provide mental strength when in difficult/dire situations there is no other support and the person seems to be by themselves. Religion also seems to invoke a conscience in an early stage of a person's life by placing a fear of a "hell" for doing morally unacceptable actions. Life after death is a promise based on the rewards system. The more good you do, the better the next life, whether it be in heaven or as a another person you will be. Or so they say.

Ever noticed that in many poor countries, religion is very strong? I am pretty sure there is a large following of Christianity in Mexico. As these people are strapped for cash and food, religion is there only hope and gives them a purpose in this life.

There is nothing wrong about religion, it's just the people who control it (imo the Roman Catholic Church is a good example) tend to use it to their own benefit as power over people and money with simply an idea is indeed a great power. When there is a concentration of power in a single place, there is bound to be corruption is what I think. Too much politics and money being passed around in catholicsm. No matter, as long as the person adheres to the basic principles of the religion (haven't heard of any popular religion advocating evil and violence) he's probably a good person.
