Whats the point of ram heatsinks?

yeah alot of vendors are actually selling cas 2 pc2400 ram and faster with heat spreaders already installed, and i actually read a review that compaired corsair pc2400 with and without heat spreaders and beleive it or not, the heat spreaders actually do make a difference. the pc2400 cas 2 i got from ocz came with heat spreaders already installed.
 
Man, I really doubt you need the fan and all that just for some memory to run at spec... Maybe overclocking it a bit would cause it to run hot, but I doubt the fan is really necessary.
 
I had a heat spreader on my stick of Crucial 256 ram that I was overclocking and I still killed it. if you are running at spec, it's just eye candy. If you are overclocking the poop out of it, make sure you have some kind of fan on that.
 
well it is only 9 bucks.. after you paid 125 for your case, 88 for your water cooling system, 40 bucks for your case fans, 30 bucks for your elite athlon hacking/unlocking kit, it is a drop in a bucket 😉

since the fan in my window covers up the alpha8045 🙁
 
im going to get only heat spreaders for my crucial memory.. the one with the fan looks fugly... plus i want to keep my system as quiet as possible. if ya have a case with good air flow, i wouldnt bother with the one with the fan.
 
i find them generally useless for SDR. but dont they look cool... that one with the fan looks gay.

clarification, the stuff in that picture is called a heat spreader.. it is not meant to pull heat off a device, but merely to distribute it. which is why it does not have those funky fins.

i recall the rdr (rambus) memory required a heatspreader due to thermal issues...

the memory itself should not get hot, because they work on capacitance, not resistance.

however, that GPU or whatnot will definitely heat those components up. and heat does have an effect on capacitance (one is via surface area)...

of course memory technology has changed a lot. the cooling is probably required to maintain the integrety of the memory at higher frequencies...

IMHO they are too pricey just for looks anyway. the thermaltake ones come with heatspreaders for one stick and then some sinks for video ram as well. But still pricey!
 
The sets with ramsinks and heatspreader go on sale at fry's a lot for 6-7 dollars. I got them for my 2 sticks of pc-133 ram along with a iwill active northbridge cooler and I was able to get my bus speed up 18 mhz from 140 to 158. I don't know if this is because of the ramsinks or northbridge cooler, but either way, I'm not complaining.
 
they just look cool... maybe we will start to need them as clock speeds increase, but for now they are great for people with windows in their cases and stuff.
 
The active cooling heat spreaders(the ones with the fan like in the link) are pretty much pointless. With DDR ram though if you plan to oc it's a safe investment. I'm getting heatspreaders for my crucial sticks though. But adding the fan doesn't help much.
