What's the point of POP-UP ADs?...

I don't understand the point of pop-up ads. Do you ever click one? Ever buy a product based on what you see? Of course not. They appear very quickly and either stay up, which allows you to close them immediately, or they "pop-under", and you don't see them until you simply close them.

So why do companies pay for pop-up ads? Makes no sense to me.

because they are cheap to put out there and if 1/100 of 1 percent of surfers buy something, they are worth it.

Even if you never click them, there is a very small percentage that will. Usually that is all that it takes for them to see a small profit with them.

But they are what started the massive war against ads.. I don't care if I see one ad, but if there are 20 crappy windows getting open, I get annoyed... So they lose again

Sometimes I click on them by accident while trying to close them...that probably gets them 8 clicks per 1000 hits instead of 6 on regular ads 🙂

The point it that banners are easily ignored. The average surfer just tunes them out like they didn't exist. Pop-ups are harder to ignore. You need to take action to get rid of them, so you notice them, even if in a negative way. That's all pop-up ads are is billboards. If they get you to pay any sort of attention they've done their jobs.

yeah.....i normally assumed everyone was intelligent like myself and got rid of pop-ups...but then when they began making them look like applications......i was shocked at how many people i knew(that i thought would know better) fell for the trick...it is unbelievable

That company got sued, by the way. The claim was that it illegaly hijacked traffic from the actual site by tricking the user into thinking that his or her system required immediate attention.

Same point as junk mail, spam, telemarketers, etc...

because people buy things. in case you havent noticed, ATOT is not an accurate cross-section of the various people in the united states. we are elite, others arent. those others buy. and buy. and buy.
I beg the difference. We have members that love shopping (see Rossman).

I make an effort to note who they are, so I can specifically avoid doing business with the perpertrator.
I will make it a point to never deal with that product, and any other item they may sell in the future.
I also make it a point to tell everyone I work with to boycott them as well.
Hopefully they will loose enough customers to collapse.
