What's the point of NSFW warning?

Seriously, whoever came up with the NSFW tag should be shot. There's no reason I have to tell you what you're allowed to look at during your work hours. In fact, if you got reprimanded or fired, it's nobody's fault but your own. Learn some person fucking responsibility. That is all.

----
dullard has it exactly correct. This is a worksafe forum by definition. If you post material that is obscene, profane, sexually oriented, vulgar or anything else, you will be vacationed. If you post it with a NSFW tag, the moderators will have a tendency to go lighter with only a warning, or just ignoring it completely in the social sub-forums. It is not a full 'get out of jail free' card (some things can NEVER be posted), but we will take that NSFW tag into account when we decide on a punishment.

If you want a forum where you can post whatever crap you want, go to 4chan. This is not /b/. This is a forum for working professionals not the dregs of the internet. YOU need to take personal responsibility for the links you post, and YOU need to follow the rules you agreed to when you signed up.

Yeah. If your job is such that NSFW is a bad thing, maybe you shouldn't be fucking around on internet message boards.

 to OP, who is below me.

It's you're freaking personal responsibility to not post not safe for work links without a NSFW tag.

Here are the terms that Anandtech members agreed to when joining.
You agree that you will not use our Forums to post any material, or links to any material, which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise violative of any law.
The NSFW warning is basically the only reason we are allowed to post such posts. Think of it as your get-out-of-jail-free card. Think of it as saving yourself and giving you freedom to read those posts. Without it, those posts may all be sucked into the vast moderator vaccuum (like when a doughnut gets near Kirstie Alley).

I agree. If you can't browse nsfw stuff at work, don't be browsing this forum. In fact, I'd like to see this site drop its viewership even more.

True. However the disclaimer also applies to any situation where you might be potentially embarrassed by said content. Examples include school computers, libraries, Internet cafes, etc etc... Your job isn't in jeopardy in these cases but you still might want the warning.

Here's a pro tip: don't browse internet forums like this one when you're on a school computer, in a library or in an internet cafe.

No that still applies no mater what you post. There is no such thing as a get out of jail free card. If you post goatse it doesn't matter how much you mention it's NSFW you are getting banned. NSFW is just a courtesy to others for posting content that is still within the bounds of the terms you agree to, but that might NOT be within the bounds of the terms they agree to at their place of work or wherever they are.

I find that too harsh. At work you are often legally bound not to browse the web for pleasure, yet many people still do anyway. Here I agree you reap what you sow. But most of the examples I posted are just recreational uses where the NSFW is just a courtesy and isn't to prevent you from getting fired or anything.

Oh, geez, just STFU and deal with being courteous, it doesn't hurt you. Other people surf forums like this at home with their kids around, too. If it bothers you that much, why don't you go to a forum that lets people post whatever garbage they like inline, unfiltered.

One reason is for people that have lost their jobs do to fuck wads posting shit that is way off topic of thread and you clicking on it and whacked shit pops up.
*takes a breath*

I got fired from an engineering company for that. Nice accounting position @ 50k a yr. (I have a better job now so its all good) I don't even recall the thread, and porn was not allowed at the forum. Some dip shit posted a link in the thread and says it is something else. Me, being a fucktard (I can look back now) I click it. Brings me to some piercing shit site. I get fired the next day from the no tolerance policy. It was nice. I agree it was my fault, but when your on a forum that porn is not allowed (as to y there during the day at work) and have never exp. that there before...it kinda blows. :D

Maybe you should spend more time with you kid instead of clicking on links in message boards? I still don't see why posters should be responsible for other people's surroundings. Gross stuff should be expected on the internet. The guy clicking on links on a board with a kid in the room has no right to get upset when one of those pics is a woman pooping vomit on her face. He should know it comes with the territory. If browsing forums is so imporant, do it when you're alone and in a setting in which you won't find it upsetting.

Some stuff you don't want to see. if the link is not descriptive you have no idea what you'll be heading into. The NSFW tag at least lets you keep away from the worse stuff.

Then maybe you should avoid clicking on links with no descriptions? Have you ever hung out on IRC? Nobody whines about NSFW links and nobody posts links with silly warnings. It's a given that links = potential horribleness. Click at your own risk. This isn't Sesame Streettech.
