Whats the point of modding an Xbox?

I see all kinds of little mod chips for the xbox, like the lite 2.2 seems the be a popular one.

Also, whats the point of putting a 80gb or 200gb harddrive into it?

Rip games onto hard drive. Turn into media center and put all your movies/music on there. That was my original intent before I FRAG'ged mine and got myself banned from Live.

You can store games on the hard drive and don't need to use the discs. The games can be downloaded and transferred to the HD or ripped by the xbox w/ mod chip onto the HD. Can play backup games.

You can copy your games on the HD so that they load faster, and you dont have to lug 30 boxes around with you if you take it to someones house, you can put Xbox Media Player on it and play mp3's, divx, and pictures on there...lots of other stuff too.

whoa sweet, did not know this...

also, i;'ve heard stuff about xbox's and emulation... whats with that?

i use it as a media player, downloaded several seasons of epoisodes and put them on dvds from BT. (all of simpsons, family guy, home movies, aqua teen, critic, south park, couple others) good stuff.

edit; futurama. 🙂

If I got a modchip it would already have a bios so I could throw in a larger hard drive? I have an extra 120gb hdd that I'm not using but i never really bothered to read in about modchips.

It would probably come with the Cromwell bios which is the only legal one they are allowed to ship with. You would have to immediately flash it to use homebrew software.
