what's the point of locking a thread?

I've noticed that by the time most threads are locked they've already been "worn out" so to speak. Why do you lock so many threads?

Uhh, ever been on a newsgroup? There's six month old threads in some of them, and the last few messages are:

"F you"
"No, f you".

Repeat...

So they don't spring back to life like the bad guy in all the thriller action movies.

Locking means that no one can reply to the thread. It stops flame wars and such...

LOL, I should have been more specific. Sometimes I see threads that are locked for no apparent reason. They don't appear to be flame wars. In fact, I see some threads that contain very valid questions that are locked anyway. Why?

Locking serves a couple of purposes. One, as has been mentioned, is to stop further posting (believe me, some threads would go on forever (whether it be an argument of nef-fest) if not locked.

Another purpose is to show members what is not acceptable so that they can learn from and take example from a locked thread.

In that case probably either wrong forum or duplicate post (by same person starting locked thread, or another very similar post is current).

It would be helpful if the mod gave a reason for the lock. Or moved inappropriate topics to thier correct forum.

They do, and they do. Not that they need to give a reason, usually the reason is blatantly obvious.

It will never ever be blatantly obvious to fanatics, assholes, and dumbfvcks. If the MODs were to give a reason for everything, they'd be spending all day giving reasons to fanatics, assholes, and dumbfvcks in forever non-ending cycles.

I'm sure plenty noticed, I don't put up with a*sholes, fanatics, and dumbfvcks at all no matter how polite or civilized they are pretending to be. All others are no problems.

You'd never see a complaint from me of any actions of any MODs here, my email had never been spammed from Anandtech's BBS-sources. That alone said much of this BBS's MODs and Web-Masters quality comparing to others I'd given a different email to, not even mentioning hack attempts from those others.

NO MOD at this BBS can do any wrongs in my opinion even if the action was not in my favor.
