What's the point of having Contact icon on iPhone?

I mean...I can browse, edit, call contacts via the phone book on iPhone. So why did Apple add an icon that does exactly the same thing? Anyone care to explain?

For quick access. It's 1-2 less button pushes. It's like asking why does the iPhone have fixed app icons on the bottom of the screen, when you can access them just like any other app.

It also makes the iPhone UI homogeneous with the iPod Touch's, since the latter lacks a telephony application. Notably, iPhone OS 1.xxx doesn't have the Contacts app visible on the iPhone, that was added with 2.xx.
