What's the point of having 5.1 DD decoding in a car?

I know a guy who put a 5.1 system in his 92 Jeep. He bought the woot.com deal on the Fostgate DVD deck and LCD screen. Just hooked up the existing speakers, and then bought a Pioneer center channel intended for car audio use, and mounted it on the ceiling panel. It sounded pretty good... kinda like dome tweeters, but better (as far as regular music).
