What's the point of fog lights on a car??

Our 240SX came with fog lights stock and well..I don't see the point of them apart from looks.

It gives out a nice yellow light and really makes the car look good from the outside, but while driving they have little effect on visibility. I know they are mostly used in inclemental weather such as rain and snow and i used them in those conditions too...again it didn't help much.

Anyway to aim them properly?? I have no clue since this is our first car wiht fogs.

fog reflects a lot of light from normal headlights, esp. high beams back to you're eyes.... making it hard to see.... Fog lights are lower down so that the fog wont reflect light back to your eyes, helping you see better... and they help you see better right in front of you... regular hlights point out far in front of your car so you can see distances.. fog lights have a wider beam of light, but dont extend out as far. And they are cool, the glass cracks easily, and they're a pain to replace.

DUH! For driving in the fog, of course. If you are driving in a heavy fog you turn off your headlights which are aimed fairly high and produce a lot of reflection and turn on the fog lights which are usually amber/yellow and are aimed low and close to the ground to prevent reflection and glare.

In Canada your headlights are always on. It's called Daytime Running Light and as soon as your car is in gear, its on. You can't turn it off (talking about DRL lights which are little less brighter than low-beams). I do use the fogs in heavy fog, but it doesn't help as much as I thought it would. Maybe its just me.

Anyways, most newer cars in the United States have Daytime Running Lights as well. There are ways to turn them off though 😉

Duh. Anyone stupid enough to turn off their headlights in a heavy fog deserves to be run over by a semi and turned into highway pizza. Don't use your high-beams, they do reflect off the fog. Fog lights will add some close in visibility and make it easier for people to see you. Drive with your low beams, fog lights if you have them, don't overdrive your headlights (which means slowdown). Whatever you do, DON'T TURN OFF YOUR HEADLIGHTS. It will be almost impossible for someone to see you if all you have are your foglights on.

Remember your taillights go on/off with your headlights.

They look cool, sums it up perfectly.

Have you ever seen a 95 Dodge Neon Sports Coupe in Brilliant Blue with fog lights?

It looks awesome.

I have DRLs, and I still can't figure how to turn mine off short of turning off the engine. The dial has one position for DRL, one for night time, and the third position is I think they're parking lights- the yellow ones at the corners that double as turn signals. weird thing is my headlights stay on when those the parking lights are on too...if anyone has a volvo 940 lmk 🙂

I think he meant unconventional ways of killing your DRLs. Like pulling a fuse or something to that effect. I wish I knew more about electricity / wiring.

neons are fugly imho

but seriously fog lights are cool in inclimental weather but in my opinion much better at (i hope) getting me noticed by stuipd people driving enormous suvs)

Fog lights look fairly spiffy, I think. But I do use mine whenever it's foggy or raining hard. I don't notice much, if any, improvement in visibility, but I'd imagine it's easier for other drivers to see me.

Either that, or a dashboard switch, or most cars I've tested will turn the lights off using this meathod:

Turn car off
Put parking brake on ONE CLICK (this is enough to turn them off, but not enough to actually make your brakes make contact, thus heating up)
Turn car on, enjoy

I wouldn't do this all the time as the DRL's are actually a good idea, but it is handy to be able to turn off your headlights at certain times. Also this meathod doesn't involve cutting wires, thus possibly screwing yourself over in warranty/insurance issues.

I notice the difference driving all the time on my car, it puts out more light to the sides and right in front of the car. For me, it improves the overall visibility at night, and of course in incliment weather.

I don't have the daytime running lights, but I always have my headlights turned on. Its just as much of a habit as putting on my seatbelt. I get in the car, put on the seatbelt, start the car, turn the lights on, put in gear.....
