Whats the point of bittorrent?

i just have a rant about the premise of it, at least for me...everytime i want to download something, even a 100mb file, it says 24+ hrs with dl speeds of 5kb/s....i know beggars cant be choosers but it defeats the purpose of p2p when it takes days to download a file...and im using rogers cable so thats not the problem for sure... 🙁

it speeds up. you have to just leave it alone and come back later. it also depends on how much you are sharing, so it will be slow at first but you have to be persistent.

my share rating is like 45...when it was like .5 it hardly downloaded at all for me, but when i hit an even 1 things started to speed up. now its wayyyy faster for me (yes, there has been a noticeable difference since my share rating has improved so much)

It all depends on how many people are sharing that file, and how much you are sharing. When anime first comes out , bit torrent can go around 400kb on a unveristy server. At that time the irc bots are usually clogged, so bt is teh best way. ALso this is a good way to distribute bandwidth evenly so no one host gets owned on that part.

Yeah, your DL speed is very much dependent on your upload speed. ie the more you upload the more you download. Often things will start out slow and then speed up, like MrDudeMan says, just stick with it and let it go for a bit.

i tried downloading sg season 1-7 (granted it was a 54gb file and it was going to take some 300 days) and i left it for about 2hrs ...

The point of BT is to help ppl download large popular files. BT depends on a large amount of ppl seeding/downloading (who aren't limiting their upload to some tiny amount). If you're looking for something thats either old or obscure, you're better off with something like DC++ where you can find more specific stuff.
