What's the perfect Anti-Zombie close combat weapon?

Warhammer first, then bec-de-corbin if no warhammer. Even my trusted 24oz geology hammer would be great at destroying brains but the handle is a little short if you don't want zombies to scratch you.
 
I would refuse to rely on only 1 weapon...

Main weapon - recurve crossbow (or maybe a normal recurve bow for increased rof)

Deadly - one shot in the head take out a brain...
durable - No compound mechanism that can break
Ideal for hunting.

The sword on the bottom in that gif appears to be a Cold Steel Special Projects piece, their broadsword I guess. Well made and tempered correctly for abuse.

The sword striking it, however, looks like a cheap 440 stainless replica sword (note the uniform, perfectly equal hamon on the blade) and thus is in no way an accurate representation of the efficacy or durability of a real katana (that being one that's not made of stainless, is folded and made from two types of steel, and comes with a saber grind).

The curve (and edge!) or a katana cuts better than a straight edge, and the tanto point is superior for penetration compared to a generic double edged spear point.
Katana wins.

wtf is the zombie apololipse happens then I am breaking into the first museum I find and grabbing an entire Samurai armor set with that naginata.

Its relatively light for its reach and can decapitate easy.

Zombie cant eat me with no mouth.

To those that say katana, I would honestly claim a standard saber would be a better choice.
1. A saber is meant for 1 handed use, unlike the katana which is primarily a two handed weapon. This allows another hand to open doors, and do other important tasks. Although one could use a katana with one hand, it is difficult and ineffective.
2. A saber includes a sizable hand guard, adding another layer of protection as well as impromptu brass knuckles in emergencies if they get really close. One could also perhaps use the hand guard to pound nails in and do other tasks adding to the usefulness of a saber.
3. A saber is generally slightly shorter, but also lighter than a Katana. They easily weigh under 2 pounds.

Not saying a saber isn't a good weapon (it is) but I think you are generalizing a great deal about katana. Like everything else, they came in a variety of sizes and styles. Also, there is a distinct difference in katana from "the old days" (they were big and heavy, with lots of reach and wide blades for shearing power) and the later periods where the majority of the time a sword was worn for personal security or ceremony. Swords made later were straighter, shorter and lighter. The blade quality was the same or better, but it's like comparing a cat's paw to an actual crow bar.

Also, just because every samurai movie you've ever seen has everyone holding a katana with two hands doesn't mean that the proper use of the blade mandates two hands. Ever hear of ni to kenjutsu? Two swords, one hand each. The Takenouchi ryu in classical bujutsu favors shorter blades over the full length katana, one hand use there.
Even though I don't have any experience with sabers, I know there are functional and aesthetic differences between say, a French saber and an Indian talwar, or a German saber and a Navy cutlass. Sabers for cavalry could be quite long and weighted accordingly to their designated role.

I will agree with you that a hand guard is a valuable percussion instrument, but I've never seen any with the dimensions needed to be able to drive actual nails without damaging sword or user.

Kenjutsu, as taught by the guys in the naginata pic above, is distinctly different than what is taught in classical bujutsu, there's more stabbing than slashing, and the scabbard or another weapon is often held in the other hand.


The more I think about it I like the idea of a spear. A mace also sounds like a good bet.

Mine is high carbon steel battle ready, not some pretty toy. You can easily switch between one handed and two handed techniques. Still too big for sword and shield technique but you could use a buckler.

And of course my standard walking stick would be a 6 foot Bo staff. With proper Matayoshi technique the end will easily crack the skull like a watermellon

A ninja to is a nice alternative with easy one handed use or switch to two handed
 
I have a couple of claymores as well as a daikatana, but these are very long, and heavy, designed for battle against armored opponents. Zombies would not need that kind of stiking force, and the length would be a hinderance if you got tangled up with too many of them. It would definitely depend on the surroundings. If it was indoors I would recommend duel wield medium bladed weapon. Esp if we are talking fast type over the slow type zombies.
 
A metal fireplace stick. The one that has a spike coming out at a 90 degree angle. It's very light weight, and should be able to pierce the skull. Remember, you have thousands of them to fend off, so you need something that wont tire you too much to walk around and use all the time, until the apocalypse recedes.
 
My choice would be a can of Aquanet and a lighter.

Longevity: Better have a supply of both on hand, one can won't last long.
Effectiveness: At killing, probably not very. But once his eyes melt, he's no threat to anyone.
Portability: Fits in my purse or backpack.
Messiness: Very.
Subtlety: Not very loud. Depends on how much noise the zombie makes.
Utility: Can be used to start a cooking fire, as well.

lol, good ol aquanet. back in the day i used that stuff quite a bit.
