What's the oldest religion in existence: Christianity, Hinduism, Islam??

I wonder about this from time to time, which religion has been around the longest?

Ever hear of Judaism? If you're talking organized religion, of course. Otherwise it would have to be sun worship, which has been around basically since the beginning of mankind.

To answer my own question I'm kind of leaning towards christianity but I could be wrong. I used to think christianity was the dominant religion but later I learned that muslims are far more numerous than christians.

I'm guessing that there are "pagan" religions that have been around longer, but I'm not a historian, I just play one on ATOT. 😉

I forgot to add that one. Here's a good question though, is Christanity an extension of Judaism?

Yes. "Jesus" himself even said he did not come to change the Mosaic Laws (tenets of the "Jewish" religion) and followed the laws in his own life, as well as encouraged others to do the same. Christianity is nothing more than "Judaism" with a faith in Jesus Christ.

Christianity is "only" approximately 2,000 years old. Judaism was around well before that (obviously, since the first Christians were converts from Judaism). Judaism also pre-dates Buddhism (though Buddhism pre-dates Christianity). Confucianism also pre-dates Christianity. Hinduism pre-dates Buddhism, but I'm not sure how Hinduism and Judaism relate in terms of time existant.

A. Christianity is an extension of Judaism

B. Judaism has been around in some form or another for about 4000 years.

C. Islam has been around for about 1500 years

Thats what I thought, but I guess all Jews don't believe that.

Buddhism stemmed from Hinduism, so I would say Hinduism. Although as others have suggested, paganism and nature worshipping have been around longer than that.

I believe the Aboriginal religion of Australia has a 9000 year tractable history and is the oldest so called religion. Religion exists I think, because the human mind via language has been divided and individuals from time to time experience a return to its original unification. When that experience is put into words the words come form the words before. Thus, in different times and places we get different words and what looks like different religions. But the state of unification is all the same. So there is really only one God or one Truth (State) and it's as old as separation.

Among the three on your list: Hinduism.

But, if you're looking for the oldest organized religion that will definitely take some more looking into.

What's the oldest religion or form of worship that has been documented? I'm just curious if anyone has ever established that.

What's the oldest religion, answered on Yahoo.

Hinduism is generally considered to be the oldest religion still being practiced today. This ancient religion was born when the Aryan peoples migrated to Northern India and first put their religious tradition into writing. The texts they created are the Vedas, which were written around 1,500 B.C.E. (before common era) and have greatly influenced Indian culture ever since.
Several other religions are almost as old as Hinduism. Judaism traces its roots back to the patriarch Abraham, who lived around 1,800 B.C.E. While the Jewish people are descended from Abraham, it was Moses who first recorded the Torah, the Jewish holy text, in 1,400 B.C.E. Most sources consider the date of the Torah as the beginning of Judaism.

Zoroastrianism is sometimes called the world's oldest prophetic religion. It's certainly one of the earliest religions founded by one person. Scholars are not certain when the founding prophet Zarathustra actually lived. Some believe Zarathustra lived in the 6th century B.C.E., while others trace his writings to the 14th or 13th centuries B.C.E.

India has been a veritable cradle for world religions -- in addition to Hinduism, both Jainism and Buddhism originated in India. The first of Jainism's sacred lords, called a Tirthankara, lived in the 8th century B.C.E. The last of these lords was Mahavir, who lived in the 5th century B.C.E. and was a key figure in spreading the religion. The philosophical teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha, spread around Asia after his death in 483 B.C.E.

Oddly enough, the two religions that dominate the world today are relative newcomers to the spiritual scene. Christianity began with the teachings of Jesus Christ around 30 C.E., and Islam started in 610 C.E. with the prophet Muhammad's revelation.
