I spent a little over a grand building my first computer. At that time I wasn't working yet (too young) and the money was from birthdays, christmas ect..
About $4600 I believe. I was an E5 in the Navy, and had nothing but expendible income. It was a high-end dual Xeon confiuration, RAID controller, rendering card for 3D Studio Max. Nice machine then. 🙂
Back in the end of 2006 in my final year of college; I did a complete overhaul of my rig not using salvaged parts. I believe it was from the ground up including the monitor, keyboard and anything you can possibly imagine. I believe the final cost was $2600. I was NOT WORKING at the time but going to college and had saved up my extra grant money left-overs from the beginning of 2002 when I enrolled. I still have that system technically, but it's now my fiance's rig.
I'm by no means rich now, and only make roughly $33K a year working 30 hours a week as a marketing assistant, but my limit would be $3500 regardless of how much I make (more or less). I don't game as much as I use to anymore (loosing interest day by day) and hardware is so advanced now it's hard to upgrade with a straight face knowing what I have now is more than enough for my needs.
I did buy a 160GB Intel SSD a few months ago for roughly $460. That has been the 2nd most expensive SINGLE upgrade I have ever purchased. The 4870x2 I bought in September 2008 was the most expensive at $530
2k was my biggest...I was going to college and my parents got my brother a 2k computer, so they gave me 2k to build my own!
It was 1999 and boy was it a beast! Got the first DDR video card ever...still a Slot A athlon CPU! Man those days!
Ever since it's always been slowly upgrading...mobo/cpu/RAM combos would be the biggest since but I've always tried for mid-range value parts since then.
