Not so much for everday usefulness...just for the sheer data(& job)saving miracles it has performed. For so little money.

I'd have to say the gcc compiler. NOTHING could get installed from source on UNIX without this little baby.

I consider that pretty damn useful.

Probably winamp (back in it's prime). Now, not really sure. AIM is more of a time waster than useful as are most thing listed. I guess IE?
