Just normal childhood injuries like two broken arms, a broken elbow, etc. I think the elbow was the most painful overall because they gave me electro shock therapy to remove calcium deposits and restore motion. That didn?t help as much as my bow and arrow did.

3rd degree burns on 80% of feet from being burned alive while passed out from smoke inhalation.

Constant migraines.

Fell on a wrought iron fence and had one of the spires draw a line down my face tearing it completely open wide enough for me to get my middle finger inside it vertically.

Hmm, the most painful was getting a 4 inch sandwich toothpick shoved up my heal an into my bone so that only 1 inch was visible. My mother with a pair of pliers pulled it out. Imagine having a broken arm that hurts just to touch, then imagine someone jerking on it, twice. (The first time the pliers slipped because she didn't have it gripped hard enough. She was pulling pretty dang hard.)

Next would be getting my hand slammed in a car door (also got it crushed by a tractor, about the same level of pain) My fingernail fell off with that one.

And a close third would have to be when I broke my arm. That hurt pretty bad. (almost as bad as when my brother almost chopped my big toe off with a shovel...)

Yep, I have had some pretty painful experiences.

Got shot in the tailbone, the direct pain wasn't all that bad but the next three days was pure hell, i consider myself lucky though, if it hadn't deflected off the tailbone it would have been much worse.

I had a cholestiotoma in my left ear that had grown so large that it displaced the hearing bones and invaded my mastoid bone. One doc misdiagnosed pretty badly (said it was just an ear infection) so I lived with it for several years. I figured something wasn't right when I started waking up in the middle of the night with blood/puss on the pillow and the most excruciating pain you can imagine coursing from my inner ear, around the lower jaw and down into my tongue. Is was terrible.

These 2 tie:

1. Once I was in a very adrenaline-high footrace down an outdoors stairwell. I was a little behind, and decided it would be a good idea to jump the last 10 onto hard concrete. Right side was perfectly fine, but I half-tore a ligament in my left foot. Thinking it was just a bad sprain, I put it on ice and let it rest. The next day it had swelled up like a softball, and I was hopping/wincing on my way to the bathroom, let alone across campus to student health. Fortunately I got some crutches, but it still hurt like a bitch for a few days.

2. Last semester I had some kind of stomach flu for 3 days. For the first 12 hours I had excruciating (as in rolling on my bed moaning/cursing) abdominal cramps. When it finally happened, vomiting had never felt so good.

Fell about 6-7 feet and landed on a concrete floor on my tailbone. Couldn't walk straight the whole day, and the rest of the week I had this funny hunch until I got to the chiropractor to get it straightened back out. Man that hurt.

Sophomore year of high school, lunchtime 21 (FFA basketball) no blood no foul, very competitive. Raced two people for a loose ball and ended up flying into the wall at sprinting speed. Didn't know my shoulder was dislocated until it popped back into place. Tore two ligaments and was in a sling for 8 weeks. Can't shoot a bow or do many pushups or pullups anymore, and I can't lift anything heavy over my head. Close second was when the Demerol wore off after wrist surgery four years later.

3rd degree burns over 1/3rd of my body caused by 700 degree roofing asphalt when I was 16 years old and working a summer job. Basically, I was hauling some material backwards and the crane driver, who was acting foreman while our normal foreman was on vacation, pushed a mop cart directly behind me without warning me. I hit the back of my knees on the cart and fell backwards into the hot asphalt. My right hand instinctively went back to brace my fall and actually sat in the asphalt for a good 60 seconds. I was leaning back to far to stand straight up so I rolled over to get out of it and the whole thing basically dumped on my back and arms.

Asphalt isn?t like cooking grease. Grease gets on your skin at 500 degrees and a minute later its at room temp. Asphalt on the other hand just keeps on cooking so the crew threw two water coolers full of ice water on me to shock the asphalt. That saved my hand but presented a new problem. When I got into the burn clinic the asphalt was basically fused to my skin and they only had one way to get it off, by peeling it off (along with the skin it was fused too). Think being flayed alive. They couldn?t put me to sleep because I was in shock and they couldn?t give me massive doses of morphine for the same reason. So, for 4 hours they peeled my skin off while I screamed like a bitch in more pain then I thought the human body could endure before shutting down. It was so bad that, even though I didn?t want to die I wouldn?t have thought twice about shooting myself at the time simply to make the pain stop.

Unfortunately the story doesn?t stop there. The treatment for burns like that is almost as bad as the injury itself. Every morning they woke me up and brought me to a room with a stainless steel chair that sat on a pedestal with all kinds of hoses coming out of it. There I went through my daily debreedment (sp?). That is where they basically take a steel brillo pad and scrub the hell out of your fresh burn wounds. The point is to remove all the dead skin to avoid infection and to allow new skin to grow. The mental and physical pain is unexplainable. I tried to stay awake at night as late as possible because I knew as soon as I went to sleep I would awake to that god forsaken room. I begged and pleaded with the nurses to not bring me to that room everyday but every god damned day they would wake me up and take me in there.

The two skin graft surgeries that I got while in the hospital where a cakewalk compared to the rest.

Holy shit

Yeah, fuck that. God damn, that is terrible. I wonder what kind of workman's compensation he got for that.

Worst part is that the accident was completely, 100% preventable. Good communication on a job site is essential for keeping people safe. Wonder what the guy did to the crane operator/forman guy... Bamboo under the finger nails sounds like a good starting point...

Yes, it was completely preventable. It was my dumb ass who was walking backwards but the cardinal rule on the roof has always been "Your mopcart is YOURS. Never walk away from it".

As far as the bamboo sticks, it took me a year to be able to hold a pencil with one of those big rubber things that kids use while learning to write. So that woulda been a bit tough.

So, do I get a prize for being the permanent (so far) winner in the pain threads?

How do you look now that you've healed?

I broke my jaw into four pieces. The break itself didn't hurt that badly, but going outside (it was December) was excrutiating when I started to shiver. It's not like I was outside for long, but just going out there briefly was horrible.

As you can see, I get scrapes and cuts REAL easily (and often) but its not that bad. The rest looks about the same.

Hmm...

-When I was 12 I was playing football. I got the ball, ran, and was tackled by two guys at once. From what they said, my left leg twisted and my knee bent back and I kicked myself in the shoulder. I screamed in pain and passed out. I woke up, sat out for a play, went back in, and fell down in pain crying.

-When I was 7 I was riding my bike and my foot got caught such that the tire was grinding away at the sole of my foot. I had to stuff gause in it for a while. My mother was obviously freaked out.

-When I was 11 we were running backwards in the gym in our socks. I hit a puddle of water and shattered my foot. I was in a cast for like two months.

-When I was 20 I got sunburned so badly that I literally could not wear a shirt for two weeks. I was covered in horrible bubbles that would leak and pop. It was terrible.

Those are the most painful things I can remember. I think I'll have to go with #1 for sharpness of pain and #4 for agony over time.

Toss-up between dislocating my shoulder and having the doctor re-break my finger without the lidocaine being injected in the proper place.

Had an ear infection when I was a kid and my ear drum burst. Blood just started flowing out of my ear and the pain was so bad i just kept saying i wanted to die over and over again. Definitely doesn't hold a candle to darwin's story though.

Holy shit

Yeah, talk about a horror show! I've been living a charmed life.

Got to quote some Blake after that:

Songs of Innocence and Experience
William Blake

"The Divine Image"

To Mercy Pity Peace and Love, All pray in their distress: And to these virtues of delight Return their thankfulness. For Mercy Pity Peace and Love, Is God our father dear: And Mercy Pity Peace and Love, Is Man his child and care. For Mercy has a human heart Pity, a human face: And Love, the human form divine, And Peace, the human dress. Then every man of every clime, That prays in his distress, Prays to the human form divine Love Mercy Pity Peace. And all must love the human form, In heathen, turk or jew. Where Mercy, Love & Pity dwell, There God is dwelling too.

I spiral fractured my ankle in a judo match. That was the most physical pain I've ever felt. More painful then when my appendix burst.
