Thinking about getting the 2.8C proc. however, I've heard wonders about the 2.4C

Which would you recommend? mobo will be Abit IC7-MAX3

thx!

2.6C is the best per dollar. They can all hit really high speeds though, so just buy whatever's a good value.

2.4C used to be so popular since before the price cuts, the 2.4C had the best value.

newegg has them labeled nicely, however, I believe they support 800MHz fsb

btw, how far should I overclock my cpu if all I want to use is the stock heatsink? which heatsink should I consider for maximum overclock-ability? thx

I have 2.6C and I run fine at 3055ghz on stock heatsink but my temperatures are getting up there at 64*C. Partial reason for these high temperatures is that I am using an Abit IS7 motherboard and Abit tends not only to undervolt but show higher temperatures than what they really are. Still the BIOS thinks the temperatures are 64*C and at around 67 (if i put it to 3.2ghz) it'll start to throttle back, and the mouse becomes jerky like the processor gets hit in the balls every 5 seconds its basically unusable...That happens after 2 hours of operation usually so i had to order a new heatsink.

But most ppl are able to get 2.6 to 3-3.2 on stock heatsink with a slight increasing the voltage

I'd recommend you look into:

1.) Good Perfomance + Very Quiet = Zalman CNPS-7000CU/AL
2.) Amazing Perfomance + Can be quiet/loud depending on fan selection = Thermalright SP-94 (with heatpipes), Thermalright SLK-800/900/947 series.
3.) Alpha PAL 8942 (thats a bit expensive for its perfomance i'd say since the coolers in option 1 are cheaper, quieter and they perform just as good)
4.) Cooler Master Aero 4 or 7+ (Copper) or Jet 4

Also look in this database, it shows overclocks with various CPUS as well as compares coolings systems on air and water: (Click On Reviews if you want to see many review options but i've provided you the links anyways)

CPU Database
p4 Heatsink Roundup (The Top performers)

There are many others, and you can click on each one to read a separate review

2.4C at 3G idles at 27 to 31 depending on room temp and max I've ever seen on it was 46. Rides on a Asus P4P800 Deluxe. My partner in crime has the same setup less the deluxe and his numbers are the same except he just pushed to 3.3G with stock cooling and 1.6V on the cpu. The 2.4C's are monsters and worth every penny.

Just got a 2.6C on a Albatron 865PE Pro II. No OC yet. Pretty much a noob. Lookin forward to it tho. CPU runs at 34 in idle/ 43 on load. Case 31, upto 35 on load. Two Antec 120mm fans. Can't get 3rd fan rpms to display in MBM5 for some reason. I like the Albatron board.

Your cpu will probably hit a wall before your stock cooling is not effective. I run a 2.8 @ 3.5 with stock cooling. You may need more cooling if you bump the voltage significantly. I would get the 2.8c. It is closer to the 3.2-3.5 most P4s max out at. It will require less of a FSB raise to reach those speeds and I would rather have the higher cpu speed than the higher FSB.

I have my 2.4C OCed to 3.0 Ghz at stock voltage. I'm running a IS7 that reports temperatures much higher, but it's only "53" at load with a CNPS7000Cu. The damn hsf is so heavy it looks like its gonna fall off :p. But yeah, I'd recommend the 2.4C or 2.6C for OCing.

I wished I had a 2.8 so I could OC past 3.0 without running up my memory. The IS7 hates my xms3200c2 so it won't go past 2-3-3-6 @ 400 Mhz.

I'm curious as to how people are overclocking P4s with a stock fsb speed of 200mhz(800) while still using 3200DDR.

Can the fsb of the P4 processor be changed independant of the memory clock or something?

Most 3200 will oc to a certain extent. After that the memory ratio has to be changed to 5:4 ratio. Then ddr3200 would be running at 160MHZ instead of 200Mhz at stock FSB and would be running its rated speed of 200MHz at a 250FSB.

I believe you can only get M0 steppings for 2.4c and 2.8c right now. I haven't heard anyone getting it for 2.6c yet. If you want to hit 300fsb you really need M0 steppings.

I would go for 2.8c myself if you're looking to overclock.

explain to me this M0 stepping, thx.
