What's the most expensive/extravagant purchase you've ever made?

Let me make this clear by expensive I don't mean in plain dollar amounts but in relation to your ability to afford it at the time. If you make 500K a year a Lamborghini may be less expensive than a medium priced laptop for someone making minimum wage, well maybe. Anyway the point is to list the most expensive purchase you've ever made that you could barely afford, or maybe you couldn't afford it? What was it and why did you buy it?

If you're referring to debt to income ratios... my first house. My gf and I maxed out. This was like 15 years ago...

Coincidently it was also how I learned not to buy a house with someone you aren't married to.

Umm not really what I had in mind but, that's more like the most painful small purchase not BIG one.

I purchased my first home with a 103% mortgage and barely enough income to make the payments.

Well, I guess the largest "purchase" I've ever made was going 15,000$ into the hole in college loans before I have ever made a single dollar on my own merit (amazing isn't it that just the expectation of getting a degree is enough for lenders to shell out thousands of dollars for you even when you've never held a job in your life).

In terms of material things, TBH , I cannot even think of one thing over 100$ i have ever bought, I would say most extravagant was blowing 100$ on cab rides and hotels for Mardi Gras, and I spent alot less than most people since I didn't even buy much of the exceedingly overpriced alcohol.

Nice! I'm into photography myself and could easily see spending that kind of dough given the right circumstances.

Well I'm guessing you accidentally over drafted your account right? Cause I'm only talking about intentional purchases.

When I was younger, $110 on a purple Gameboy Color and Pokemon Yellow. At the time I could only afford the $80 for the Gameboy but didn't want to buy one with nothing to do on it, so I went into debt. My parents gave me negative allowance of $1 a week until I worked off my debts.

Probably my Canon 20D and my three L lenses (17-40, 24-105, 70-200). I love them, but it was nuts and I don't use my equipment nearly enough.

Bought a $23000 used vehicle a month into getting my second job (held two jobs at the time) where the combined gross income was $30k/yr. Shortly after that, blew $4k on an IBM laptop. Then about $10k at the casino locally, then another $5k on a vegas trip and casino losses.

Was I up to my eyeballs in debt? You bet! :D

this

Kittens with folded ears don't come cheap. ;) Other than that, I'm very tight with my money - guess it would be vacations where I'd blow through my money.

Wow. I can see spending the money on the car and laptop and even the trip but I just don't understand spending money on gambling. I would have spent the 10K on computer or consumer electronics hardware. I can even picture myself going into significant debt on a small income due to purchasing electronics and hardware, but not the gambling.

Did you pay it all off? Was it worth it in the end looking back on it?
