Why is everyone posting heavy metal songs which in reality are not that depressing? Real emotion blues are far more powerfull if you want depression. Just listen to Unplugged by Nirvana, its all depressing. Nothing is more depressing that a man and his acousic... Robert Johnson, Leadbelly... makes me cry.

Little Bunny Foo Foo ... those poor field mice.

hehe
Actually, it'd be "I don't wanna miss a thing" Aerosmith, but that's for personal reasons more than the song itself.

I typically don't listen to the actual words of songs, rather I hear the voice as just another instrument. Thus, I usually don't know which songs are supposed to be depressing. But I'd have to say:

song: Phil Collins - In the air Tonight
piece: Adagio for Strings - Samuel Barber

I'm so happy because today
I've found my friends ...
They're in my head
I'm so ugly, but that's okay, 'cause so are you...
We've broken our mirrors
Sunday morning is everyday for all I care...
And I'm not scared
Light my candles in a daze...
'Cause I've found god - yeah, yeah, yeah

One baby to another said,
I'm lucky to have met you
I don't care what you think
Unless it is about me
It is now my duty to completely drain you
A travel through a tube
And end up in your infection

Underneath the bridge
The tarp has sprung a leak
And the animals I've trapped
Have all become my pets
And I'm living off of grass
And the drippings from the ceiling
But it's ok to eat fish
'Cause they don't have any feelings

Teenage angst has paid off well
Now I'm bored and old
Self-Appointed judges judge
More than they have sold

If she floats than she is not
A witch like we had thought
A down payment on another
One at salem's lot

Serve the servants - Oh no
That legendary divorce is such a bore

As my bones grew they did hurt
They hurt really bad
I tried hard to have a father
But instead I had a dad

I'm not like them
But I can pretend
The sun is gone
But I have a light
The day is done
But I'm having fun

I think I'm dumb
or maybe just happy
Think I'm just happy
my heart is broke
But I have some glue
help me inhale
And mend it with you
We'll float around
And hang out on clouds
Then we'll come down
And have a hangover... have a hangover

Skin the sun
Fall asleep
Wish away
The soul is cheap
Lesson learned
Wish me luck
Soothe the burn
Wake me up

I'm not like them
But I can pretend
The sun is gone
But I have a light
The day is done
But I'm having fun

Goo Goo Dolls - Iris usually gets to me...but that is probably memory/person related.

Green Day - Time of Your Life (Good Riddance) always gets to me though despite how overused it is...

I was going through some other songs, but the only other things that cropped up were possibly Sarah Mclachlan or Jewel songs but I like the sad sound to some of their songs.

Just a quick correction:

I know It's Over - The Smiths (Queen Is Dead Album)
Asleep- The Smiths (Louder Than Bombs album)

Yes, Morrissey was the lead singer of The Smiths and wrote these songs as well.

Joe Satriani's "Always With Me, Always With You"

Might have something to do with the fact I was listening to it when I watched my first GF drive off a bridge.

DC

Runners Up
Shawn Phillips "The Ballad Of Casey Deiss"
Radiohead "Creep"
Soundgarden "Mailman"
XTC "Dear God"

How quickly folks forget. Relisten to Depeche Mode's "Somebody" if you really want to be depressed. The most horrible, whiney, make you want to ram a chopstick through your eardrums song which has ever been recorded.

Most of the songs we're listing have bad connotations, and are depressing by association. Others here, are indeed, extremely depressing in their own right.

I am very sorry :(

I would have to say:
Chopin - Marche Funebre
Various songs from the gladiator soundtrack
