Longest round trip has been about 1,600 miles. I make 250 mile (one-way) trips routinely for weekends home from college.

Overall trip both directions - Connecticut to Florida and back
One way trip - Houston to Connecticut (flew down, drove back)

Dumbest trip - Connecticut to Canada, had breakfast, came back immediately. Done in college when a girl at a party said she'd never been to Canada. My friends and I promised to take her some day. About 3 am we decided that 3:01 qualified as "some day" and headed for the car.

Let's see ;
1980
Drove across country (Camping Trip) from Connecticut to California and back.
1981
Drove across country again from Connecticut to Texas to California to Oregon and back to Connecticut.
1983
Connecticut to Florida
1984
East Coast to West coast twice in 6 weeks

Maximum amount of mileage was probably 6,000.

I have taken many, many more trips, But I believe these were the longest.

Colorado Springs, CO to Los Angeles, CA. Stopped over at Las Vegas, of course :) 1100 miles each way, IIRC.

I bet I have the record for the shortest road trip.

0.5 miles

It took my "girlfriend" 0.25 miles to decide that she really didn't feel like going to Hotsprings, Arkansas for the weekend. I had to pay a little over $100 for a hotel room that I didn't even get to see. I was a little pissed.

Edit...
It wasn't even my idea to go on the trip.

Us too... from Orlando, FL to Long Island, NY. I can't even imagine a cross-country trip.

During my 4.5 years of school, I repeatedly made 7-8 hour trips (one way) all by myself. I had a few MetallicA albums to take me all the way there though.

when i was 18 i drove another student's Honda Accord from Tallahassee, FL (FSU) to Seattle WA , via LA-San Diego
I-10 west to I-5 north

she was transferring from FSU to WSU (Pullman, WA) and needed her car moved while she went to Cancun for Christmas and i needed a cheap way to get home, so she paid me enough to cover the gas and i got home for free

how far is that?

That should be considered ARE YOU FUGGIN NUTS far. ;) Your answer is ~3 0 0 0 miles following that route. MS Mappoint states you should've gone through Nashville/KC/Wyoming/Idaho to get there... 2917.8 miles at about 45 hours total driving time (3 days with rest) costing $170 in gas. I love this program. ;)

FYI, Orlando to NY is 1000 miles. Tha'ts about 17-18 hours.

Longest was Virginia to Minnesotta, although I was really young, I don't even remember most of it.

Well, the last actual road trip I took was about 3500 miles round trip with three of my highschool buddies. We headed out from SE Michigan, towards Estes Park, CO (north of Denver, adjacent to Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park), stopped off at Omaha for half a day and another smaller town for half a day just outside of the CO border. After staying on the east side of the park for a few days, we headed for the west side (across that high pass, I think it's called Trail Ridge Road or something). After staying there for a couple days we headed down to Durango/Cortez, CO (right around Mesa Verde Nat'l Park) and stayed there for a couple days. Then we headed back to SE Michigan with a stop or two along the way to check stuff out. Total time was a little under two weeks.

Little while before that I made a quick trip over to the middle of NY from SE Michigan to pick up some horses flown in from the Netherlands :) that was cool (for my sister though, she works with horses a lot) - about 1000 miles round trip. Headed out one afternoon and came back the next evening (had to stay overnight because the US quarantine station operates regular 9 to 5 hours).

And before that I went on a bunch of different family road trips across the country through a bunch of different states and to both the Atlantic and Pacific (although I believe on seperate trips, heh - but with the same van, which seemed kinda cool :D), the longest one was probably on the order of 5000 to 6000 miles, they usually lasted two to three weeks. I remember one where we had some mechanical problems with our van and it was still under warranty, but by time we would be able to get back home it would be out of warranty. So, we called up the dealership or whoever to set up the repair while we were still out, heh.

The coolest road trip(s) I've heard about or seen of are this one and similar Pan American Highway road trips. Talk about a road trip - 28,400 miles... ONE WAY, lol. They all loaded up in some VW vans and headed out, looks like pretty fun stuff. I thought this comment on that page was humorous:

"The total planned route kilometers are 45,728, or 28,414 miles. Of course our route may vary depending on road conditions, weather, and political coups." - And I was worred about being late for breakfast food at the next town.

Two years ago I went on the Scavenger Hunt Road Trip for my dorm team.... started in Chicago, went down to St. Louis, to Memphis, to Nashville, to a rural part of Kentucky, to Indianapolis, to Chicago. All starting Thursday morning and getting back on Saturday night. I'm too lazy to calculate the mileage.

Gainesville to northern NH and back...long drive

Gainesville to Ravenna, Michigan (eastern side, maybe 20 miles south of Muskegon) and back..twice. Long drive, but not as long as the NH trip.

Gainesville to Oshkosh WI and back - that was kinda long too..

Maybe 5-6 hours one way. Nothing much at all. When mrsskoorb gets her tennessee nursing license we'll drive from birmingham up to the border of canada which is 800 miles each way and then come back. We plan on 2-3 days to do it. Sinking all those miles into a rental car as well :)

3000+ miles from Cleveland, Ohio to Portland, OR (through Reno, NV) all in 5 days.... in a 15' rental truck. Our average highway speed was about 75 MPH... but we often went 85 across the plains. Oh, and that was only with one person driving (my g/f did 10 hours/500+ miles a day), I don't drive.
