it wasn't the longest book in terms of length, but it sure took me months to get through it.

book: The Road by Cormac McCarthy

worst book i've ever read and the end was a total let-down.

GEB is a cool book. Hofstadter came to my high school for a talk once. You don't need to read that linearly, so I haven't read all of it. I just skipped to parts that interested me.

As for the longest book I've read, probably one of the Harry Potter books.

Probably Shogun.
If we count series I guess its the Reality Dysfunction trilogy by Peter F Hamilton. You can supposedly get all of them in one great big tome.
Or 6 little paperbacks, which is how I did them.

James Clavell's Shogun, 1211pp. Great read.

Was Shogun that long? I don't remember - I read it over ten years ago and loved it.

At least in my paperback version. I don't often have two different versions of the same book- do paperbacks tend to have more pages?

I read the Noble House, by Clavell. The paper back version was over 1271 ( amazon.com) pages while the hard cover was 1206 ( amazon.com). I read the paper back version like 1.15-1.5ish times. Read through a decent chunk of it, the stopped readinhg it for abit, and had to start over since i couldn't remember what was happening with all the plot threads that were going on.

Regardless of the amount of pages, both books looked like mini dictionaries.

also, I've 15 + clive cussler fiction novels in the Dirk Pitt series; plus some of his other fiction books.

If we're doing that, the Dark Tower series + supporting books = a shit ton of pages

Single book, probably the Stand.

Whichever is longer between It and the unabridged version of The Stand. I think The Stand is longer.

To everyone who is putting Lord of the Rings...that doesn't count. If that counts, then I get The Dark Tower, which altogether is probably 4,000 pages or so :p

Same. Man that's a long book.

Series don't count, guys.:p

same here.

had to read it for Modern World Lit during my senior year of college, over the course of two weeks (it was intense... I had a really tight reading schedule planned out that involved reading several hundreds of pages a day).

wrote a 20 page paper discussing War and Peace + Madame Bovary.

Seems a lot of us like the same reading... :)

I always remember The Stand and It were both insanely long books, but I wanted MORE dammit!

Plodding my way though Song of Susannah right now... Started when The Dark Tower was a new release, but never got around to reading Wizard and Glass for the longest time...

haha, nice. I got into the Dark Tower series late, started about 4 years ago, but plowed straight through the whole thing. It was good timing, by the time I got there, the last book was out. I actually just read It for the first time this past summer. Man it was long, good stuff though.

Yep.

Either that or one of the Wheel of Time books. Not sure just how long those are.

I need to finish that series, I've been reading it since the early 90's...

I was a bit turned off by the 4th book, so I never continued. How are the last books?

They're good. My least favorite book in the series was the 2nd book, but its necessary. I did enjoy reading all 3 from 5-7, but there are some signifigant storyline elements I didn't like. However, definitely worth reading.
