What's the law regarding elevators and inspections?

Basically on a lot of elevators around here (and probably most other places) there's a permit on it that states the date an inspection was done, and when it expires.

However I've seen a lot of elevators around here with permits on them that have been expired for years, and many with no permit posted on them at all.

Isn't there a law or something that needs you to have an current permit?

Yes, there is. However, the new permit may be on file with the plant office, or the building owners office.

the law varies from state to state and probably city to city as well, so why the hell would you come on here and not tell what specific location you're asking about?

Contact your local department of labor and express your concern. Provide building address and organization name(s) as well as elevator number.

the Department of Labor has no involvement in elevator inspections. Contact your local code compliance or building permit division.

Why do dumbasses always think they know what they are talking about?

Why do dumbasses always think everyone here is a HE?

Also you are wrong about dept of labor reference. Check it out before opening your big mouth again. EDIT: Allow 33 iterations to point yes this vary by location of course so in YOUR locale it may differ. Examine certificate for agency of issuance and contact them directly to esspress your sympathetic concern of reason.
