Excluding all F1 race cars, what is the highest revving mass produced car ? Mazda RX8? BMW m3?

Doesn't the RX-8 Redline at 9k, and the M3 at 8k? I believe the S2000 redlines at 9k, too.

:p

I've had my DSM well over 8000 many times, and never ran into any troubles as a result.

I got her up to 9000 once when I ran 2nd gear out to 85mph :D:cool:

Just a guess but fuel cut on *most* passenger cars is generally no higher than 500rpm above redline, so I'd say somewhere in the 6500 range.

WHOA! the RX8 produces 8500rpm of horsepower! That's amazing!!!!!111one ;)
I'm not sure what your peak power comparison is trying to prove... The OP simply asked which production car has the highest redline, not which car makes the most power at the highest rpm.

But why would you want to rev it past max power?

because when it is going through the transmission and the final gear, power is multiplied. Therefore 150 lb-ft through a transmission with a first gear ratio of 3.8 is actually making 570lb-ft. If you are making less than optimum power you will still probably come up ahead than if you shifted. Not always, but usually.

Because on the upshift you don't want to drop too far out of the power band. That's the whole purpose of a close ratio tranny.

My RX-7 redlined around 7L, but that was a first gen. However, the engine itself would support FAR more revolutions then 7K. For me, 7K was when it started gettin fun, then we'd go up from there.
