What's the HARDEST part when assembling a computer for you guys?

For me, the hardest part is always the attaching the heatsink onto the CPU through the motherboard socket. Every socket (939, 754, 775) just seems different to put on. For me, the AMD Socket 754 was a pain to get on as I felt like I was breaking the heatsink/cpu cause of those damned levers...

But yeah, the hardest part is putting the HSF onto the CPU, attaching and securing it to the socket of the mobo... my hands always get a bit clumsy and nervous when doing this regardless on any mobo or cpu. It always feels like I'm going to break either the CPU, socket, or the mobo itself.

Then I guess the 2nd hardest part would be putting the motherboard into the actual case with the ports (ps/2, sound, USB, firewire, etc).. My hands get clumsy and it's hard to get it into place all the time...

How about you guys?

Assembly can be a bit tricky sometimes, but the hardest part is turning it on for the first time.

I'd say not spilling the booze all over the floor or parts, but attatching the cables to the headers can be a PITA with certain mobos.

Yep hands down, hardest part are those dang levers and what not for attaching the heatsink. I always feel like I'm gonna crack the motherboard in half lol

The darn case connectors is always my problem. Just can't get a standard which way to connect them especially the hdd LED indicator.

Plugging in all the connectors for power, reset, speaker, hdd, audio, usb, etc to the motherboard. Can't they just make a big, standardized plug?

Plugging connectors to motherboard...hdd light, power, reset, etc. Yeah...only thing that slows me down....takes 2-3 tries every time.

Nothing is really hard, it's just that some parts are tedious, namely putting the mobo in the case and plugging in all the connectors.

Oh gawd yeah.

The worst part is that the case manual & mobo manual never match up.

I always have different problems with my different rigs but as most here said. The HDD, LED, etc connectors are a major PITA. I've always thought the hard part is to get the system running. I'm always worried I would've broken something

For me it is the moment when the water is circulating with actual cpus and gpus residing beneath that plastic hose and heatsink waiting to be fried should anything go awry.

Hey ... that last part was almost lyrical. I am a poet who doesn't know it. D'oh I need sleep now!

i thought doing my first build was fun. It was on a friday night, and i messed up my ankle earlier that day playing basketball, so i decided to just stay in and put my parts together.

took a nice shower, got in some comfy clothes, put on my slippers (they have rubber soles which was good for avoiding static) and got to work.

everything started right up, and i was happy.

The parents were very impressed too, as they couldn't fathom the fact that a computer could be build.

very good experience

:)

I would agree. Unless the board states which pin is + or - I always get them on bass-ackwards and the LEDs don't work. But even when they are marked the worst part is loading everything IMO. It's not hard but loading everyhing and getting updates takes longer than building it even when using a cable modem.

As most people have already said...dealing with the case jumpers for the power switch, reset switch, HDD LED, etc.. They're all tiny and jumbled together and it requires reading the mainboard manual to figure out the proper place to stick each one, and it can be very frustrating trying to get them in the right place if you install the mainboard in the case before hooking them up.

I am very much agreeing.

But then again, I opened up a biostar box the other day, took out the mobo, and what tiny little piece falls to the floor? One of those little jumper things, like the kind to set opticals to master/slave, that fell of the mobo. I don't know where it goes..........

I agree the wire management is the biggest pain.

For me it's either putting the heatsink on (some heatsinks require complicated attachment) or mounting the motherboard to the case.

attaching the hsf for sure. especially on the pre-athlon64 AMD cpu's. Slip and you break the thing.
