When I used to do it, my rates increased with what was involved (photography + editing), php+asp scripting, cgi customization, forum installation, and that type of thing.

Whats the going rate these days?

I know this is awful to say, but so much webdesign is outsourced right now.... Umm.. Don't get greedy...

If you don't know, you're not a professional. If you're just starting up in this field then take what you think is fair for your time.

I was in a similar boat - I had to do IT work even though it's not what I really do. The going rate seemed to be X, so I charged X minus $10/Hr because I didn't have the background or training to charge what a professional would.

Since you're not a professional designer and whoever is hiring you isn't serious about their website so just charge whatever you want

I was a professional, managed my own company, and yes this is serious.

I'm doing contract work for my buddy's corporate promotions company, he has a realtor that wants me to finish his site for him since his last designer screwed him over.

I work for a company that does web design, among other things, and we charge $50/hr. This includes graphics, layout, scripting.

A web developer that I personally know got $30,000 to design a 50 page mostly static HTML website (including a year of hosting / support).

Only 2 pages were dynamic, and all they did was collect personal info from a web form, and email it to a sales contact. (And he paid ME $2,000 cash to do those two pages).

It took him 2 weeks of working @ night after working his real job during the day.

I guess what I'm saying is that you're worth whatever you can get away with charging.

If you think about it, a lot of just about everything is outsourced right now :) If you do it better than them, you will still hold a job.

A several page website without scripting or various object/application integration (just plain html, css, includes) without advanced custom graphics, but graphics for buttons, including hover effects would typically go for no more than $200. Javascript interactivity, a database and a bit of server side scripting, including forum with a few not too complicated generic graphics would take that up to around $700-800.

It doesn't seem like much for what at first looks like a lot of work, but time consumption of web design has gone down significantly in recent years, largely because of frameworks/libraries and content management systems have allowed for rapid quality development with fairly advanced features. For an experienced developer all the above shouldn't be more than a week's work. It's possible you can get MUCH more than that for an equivalent amount of work, but only if you have a solid reputation and that very special client who is willing to pay a lot to make sure the site is being created by someone that won't ****** it up.

You can't charge much for 'web design' these days, partly because of outsourcing, and partly because people have realized anyone with half a brain and a 'for dummies' book can write HTML and CSS.

Programming web applications is a different story though - I make reasonable money out of it. I'm currently charging £20 or £25 (~$40 or $50) an hour or flat fees based on time estimates and those rates.
