What's the general consensus here regarding receiving something you didn't order

Ordered a jigsaw puzzle online late last week and today I check the tracking and it shows I have 2 packages from the company. One is 3 lbs which I'm sure is my puzzle but the other one is 17 lbs. I've checked my bank statement and they did debit me for the correct amount. No calls or emails from the company either.

What's the consensus? Don't ask, don't tell?😀

If they send you something unsolicitied, its considered a gift. If they sent you something wrong, you should exchange it.

It's illegal to keep it knowing that it does not belong to you and you received it in error as part of an order you did solicit. Cue the 4 page argument about whether it SHOULD be illegal now.

Edit: However, I am not sure you are under any obligation to take action unless they contact you. If they do contact you, and they pay for return shipping and schedule a pick up, then you have to return it, I believe.

Call them up. Ask them to send a label and schedule a pickup. You should have to do no more work than that. If it isn't worth their effort to do that, they'll let you keep it.

Of course you could be opening up a can of worms, where they'll either force you pay to ship it back or charge you. I've been screwed by trying to do the right thing before, so I say just keep it and do nothing.

The 17lb package is step-by-step instructions for the 3lb puzzle.

I always post this story in threads like this:

In November of 2005, I ordered a BUNCH of shit (5-6 computers worth + some parts for me)

One box, which contained all the floppy drives, my X-Fi, and some thermal compound, didn't come until January. Never had a tracking number from the beginning, and when I'd call NewEgg they were always 😕 as to why I had no merchandise.

In February, I got the same exact box again. X-Fi, 5 floppy drives, and thermal compound. I called them up, they had no record of the items being shipped, and told me I could return them (and pay shipping costs myself) if I wanted. I said no thanks. Then I sold it to a friend at 50% off. 😀

The ethical response is to contact them and offer to return it, but they must pay the shipping. You don't need to and shouldn't pay to return something you didn't order.

Got Ethics?

If I got something that I didn't order in addition to something I did order, I would contact the company and ask them what they want me to do with it. I'd only ship it back if they gave me a pre-paid label for it though, especially since I didn't ask for the item in the first place.

If I got something that I didn't order and I didn't order anything else from the company, I'd go through the same steps. It's the right thing to do.

If it's something expensive, I'll contact them and return it. If it's something cheap (i.e. a couple of CDs), I don't bother.

I would try to contact the company to figure out what's going on. You could refuse delivery when it arrives, but the larger companies typically prefer that the customer accept delivery and send it back with a reference number to get into the returns process efficiently.

On the more general topic, this thread has everything you need to know.
