Whats the "Free" OC on an E7300?

With my E8400 in the living room its 3.6 GHz whats the magic number where i dont have to adjust many settings to get a free OC on this E7300 CPU ???

( on the 8400 i have to change the FSB and thats it !!!)

While the setting you are after varies by chip, I am guessing that your other settings are on "auto", so they are adjusting themselves. It could be overvolting your E8400. However, @ 400 FSB I dont think your board would overvolt enough to hurt it.

It should be similar to the E8400, around 3.6Ghz.

There is no such thing as a "free" OC. Any and all OCing has an effect on the processors life due to increased heat (and voltage when applied). On top of all that when it comes to OCing it's always YMMV.

Nothing is on auto on the E8400, the voltages are locked in as stock

but forget the E8400 for a second

i dont know whats better to adjust and which way ? FSB and multiplier

They are both multiplier locked (upwards) so all you can do is up the FSB ...

You forgot to mention the increased frequency itself causes them to wear out faster than stock, even if the voltage isn't increased and an aftermarket cooler is used to keep the temps down.

My e7300 runs at 3.0ghz at stock vcore with the stock cooler. Haven't pushed it harder with stock cooler though, but I bet it could do a little more on stock vcore.

it only matters if you plan to have the same parts running for more than 5-10 years, most of us here upgrade every year or every couple years 😛

it only matters if you plan to have the same parts running for more than 5-10 years, most of us here upgrade every year or every couple years 😛

Not true at all. Look in Gen hardware, PSU's and Cases and Cooling and you'll see MANY MANY higher end rigs pieced together with cheap ram, power supplies and cooling hardware.

well this PC may in fact run for the next ten years, you see the reason my mom needs a new comp is because her the hard drive in her previous one lost all data - an AMD 1.5GHz, with a 64 MB geForce 2, 512 Ram with 40 GB HDD -


so i think ill let it run at a nice round 3.0 GHz and call it a day

Actually yea, its a very good idea to be on low side of overclocking if it's not the computer that is actually yours to use. Make sure to set the fan to auto/throttle speed in bios so it would lower the fan speed when not under load, she would probably appreciate how quiet it is 😀.

My E7200 is in this range too. E5200 is same stepping and also is in this range.

I'd expect similar for E7300.

hi guys. I just got some new stuff in from the UPS the other day. So I saw that you can O/C this E7300 45nm chip without changing stock cooler to about 3.0ghz without breaking a sweat. Every time I goto overclock it, and im talking not even 100mhz more- my system either freezes up or gives me the blue screen of death While gaming. I tried upping the cpu voltage to 1.2v and all it does is freeze up. The stock setting is only 1.16v. Wouldnt the CPU CHOKE under heavy stress like gaming at that low setting. Also the ram I'm runnig is at 2.02V set in the BIOS. if i go any higher my system crashes. Do i have to change anything else to make it run at 3.0ghz or even 2.8Ghz without it bombing out every min. Kinda thinkin i should of just spent $40 more and got the E8400. But i will not spend the shipping/handling to return it. So if anyone can help me, I'd really be thankful. ASROCK P43Twins1600 is my MB. BIOS VERSION 1.9

---E7300, asrock p43twins1600 MB, 9800GT vid, 2x 1 gig ddr2 ocz platnimun 1066mhz ram. 585watt psu.

This is true even in the monetary frame of reference of the term "free". Overclocking increases power consumption which increases the electric bill.

If you have someone else paying your bill then I suppose you could argue that it is at least free to you, but it certainly isn't free free.
