What's the first thing you do with a new gaming rig?

I'm just curious if anyone has a ritual that they go thru when a new build is up and running. Benchmarks? Play new games right away?

Me, I install all the old games that ran like crap on my old rig so my new one can destroy them. It's such a satisfying feeling, going from 20-30 fps to 120 fps. Kind of like beating up that bully who used to pick on you in kindergarten. It takes me days to wipe that grin off my face. Then, I buy some new games to get back down to 20-30 fps again. 🙁

Also, I have to personalize Windows to my liking before I even get to gaming. Backgrounds, themes, logon screens all have to change. If everything is default, I don't feel like it's my machine.

Moved to General Hardware.

The first thing I did with my card, was to benchmark it..... I did benchmarks the day before with the older card.

Tried my current played game to see the differnces in graphics I could run at, and still get smooth gameplay.

Did you finally get to kick Crysis in the n**s? 🙂

Play whatever game got me to upgrade in the first place just to watch it cry. I also crank the AA settings to neverbefore seen hights if my old games were running fine.

Not yet, but soon! The parts are on their way, hopefully this weekend. My E8400 with 8800GTS managed a measley 1.5 FPS at 1680x1050. Crysis is going to get what's coming.

Good idea about benching old machine too. I'll have to do that to compare scores, and have a laugh.

Probably ran Vantage, now 3dmark11.
Then played NFS Shift and Dirt 2
Take screenshots and monitor temps.

Play games that ran poorly. Then overclock and see what kind of improvement there is.

LOL, yup! And if you don't see any improvement you either (1) have a problem or (2) just wasted your $$$!

Seriously, I like to stress-test it and get a solid (not overly agressive) OC on it and then play games!

Registry everything. Stress test and check temp and stability. Port everything needed from old PC towards new PC. Install games and play.

I'll OC it... and benchmark it.

But before doing that.. I'll kiss the case(not really) and put my hand over the rear or top exhaust fan to feel that warm air flowing between my fingers.

I don't think I've ever built an entirely new rig from the ground up since my first rig, but I take your meaning. I generally pick something to check out that stresses whatever component I just upgraded.

For video cards (most frequent upgrade for me), I'll usually play a little Crysis Warhead, Metro 2033, and run the Batman AA benchmark (w/ NVIDIA cards to test out PhysX performance). I also usually try to find something that will show off new features of the card, such as something like Unigine's Heaven benchmark with DX11/tessellation. I might check out 3DMark, but it's really not very relevant to me.

Normally if I don't run into issues I load up the latest game I've been playing to see how much better it runs on the new machine. This time around it was Crysis 2 and Rift.
