I don't get why you would need a plug-in. How hard is it to click on a link with the mouse wheel to get it to open an a new tab?

Its been in there since 0.6 or 0.7 I think, but you had to go into about:config and change one of the values in there so that it would become visible in the options menu. In fact, some of the earliest extensions did little else other then enable that value and tweak a couple other things
