What's the fastest NON IBM IDE hard drive out there?

NFS4

No Lifer
**Don't even THINK about recommending an IBM drive to me**

Ok, my 30GB Maxtor DiamondMaxPlus 60 7200/ATA100 drive is a bit on the small side. I want to get a larger faster one. Which would you recommend?

The fastest right now is the WD 1000BB Special Edition, which costs about $300. Second is the Maxtor D740X, which I'm using right now (just picked it up) to replace a bad 75GXP 🙂|:|:|), and it seems great.

WD (100BB, 100BBSE, 120BB) and Maxtor (D740X) are all faster and come in larger sizes than the IBM offerings. Pretty simply, the WD drives don't come in sizes smaller than 100GB and the Maxtor tops out a 80GB, so if you need 100GB go with the 100BB, if you need 120 go with the 120BB, if you need less go Maxtor.

I think I'll stick with Maxtor. We don't have Frys on the east coast so I'll check out NewEgg's pricing on the Maxtor D740X.

**UPDATE**

Hmmm, NewEgg has the 60GB D740X for $124...

OUT OF STOCK!!! DAMNIT!!:|

IBM 75GXP series!

You must realize someone had to do it simply to be contrary. 😀

Psst: IBM has some new units coming if you can wait a few months...the 120GXPs...guaranteed to take up to 120 GB of data to the grave this time.

I seriously would recommend an IBM drive. Just don't go with the 75GXP, the 60GXP's don't seem to have the same problems, and the drives perform on the same level. I think the prices of those newer WD drives are a bit too high right now, or I would recommend those.

that's right, the WD 40gb platter series.

also, check out the latest fujitsu and maxtor series....they both put out good figures - the fujitsu being better well rounded, while the maxtor coming out on top in certain areas....

the 60gxp only shines in "theoretical"(read synthetic) access times, as far as i can tell..though real world performance is ruled by WD

Just popped a WD 600BB 60 gig in the other day storage review tests show the BB series drives to be pretty fast across the board basically on a par with the fastest ones out there. Drive is very nearly silent as well $129 at BB this past week i think it is pretty close to the same on newegg every day.

OK, so it's down to these two:

WESTERN DIGITAL WD600BB CAVIAR 60GB - OEM - $133
MAXTOR DIAMONDMAX PLUS D740X 60GB Model 6L060J33.5 - OEM - $124

I'm kinda partial to Maxtor, but it's out of stock.

<< I vote for Maxtor.

You know, there are other stores besides Newegg... 😉
>>

LOL, I ONLY shop at NewEgg and Crucial 🙂 🙂 🙂

Booyah!!!!! WESTERN DIGITAL WD800BB 80GB for $159.99 + $30 Gift Card Sunday at Best Buy. I think I found my new hard drive😀😀

My new WD 60Gb edged out my IBM 60GXP in Sandra...for what it's worth. Fortunately, my two IBM 30Gb 75GXP's haven't been a problem in the last year, one from Hungary and the other from Singapore.

Super6

I love those useless little "gift" GC's WorstBuy gives you when you buy certain products.

I'd go with the Maxtor D740X series. FWIW, my last 6 hard drives have been Maxtors, and each have performed beautifully through ALL I've put them through (high PCI clock, excess shock, direct exposure to heat), not to mention the countless formats, installs, defrags, and power on/off sequences I've run on my test benches. No issues with bad sectors, data loss, data corruption, or drive performance.

Newegg has the 80GB Maxtor D740X HD for $173, and that would be my choice if I were in your shoes. But to each his own.

WD all the way.

Maxtor.....don´t know.. my friends only had bad experiences with them. an 8GB and the new 40Gb model. I know they work well for most people, but then again, not a single one of the 12 IBM drives that work in my seti group ever failed........And 3 of them are 46 gig GXP75....

<< Western Digital is FAST, QUIET, and Professional

Maxtor is just a toy compaered to WD
>>

Okay, let's focus for one second on the topic at hand: NFS4 needs a HD.

Now, some popular options that were thrown around were the WD 80BB and the Maxtor D740X.

StorageReview recommends the D740X series on their Leaderboard, above any "BB" edition WD drive.

So unless the $300 WD 100BBSE is an option, calling the Maxtor a toy is hardly a provable statement (unless you would care to prove me wrong?).
