Watch what you buy - the XP2600+ comes in 133 and 166 MHz bus flavors, you need the former. Also, no 2500+ since this also is 166 MHz bus.
On the RAM front, you need at least PC2100 ("DDR266"); CL2 operation at 133 MHz should be supported for best performance. Faster RAM will also work but the extra headroom won't get used.
I have the exact same question, except I flashed the cheapoman bios a while ago with good results, also gives a lot more options on the CPU/PnP page. If the bios has a 166 setting, will that work with the Barton 2500+ (still using PC2100 RAM)???
Just for the record, I just implanted a 2400+ into quite an old K7S5A system (bought Dec 2001, originally with an Athlon-1000/133).
I put a new fan/heatsink on (an Arctic Cooling Copper Silent), and that was it. BIOS detected the CPU change and reverted bus speeds to 100/100; set back to 133/133 and all is fine.
This system is running on SDR RAM btw.
