1.44 refers to the capacity of the floppy; 3.5 refers to the physical size...the disk is 3.5 inches.

Since there are very few 3.5 inch floppy drives that are not 1.44MB capacity, we take them to mean the same thing.

BTW, was the capacity of the large and floppy (oh dear) floppy disks still 1.44MB?

The capacity of the larger 5.25" floppies was only 1.2 MB, but they were faster read/writes b/c the disk spun at 360 rpm vs. 300 rpm. Just a bit of old trivia for you.

Wasn't there a 2.8mb floppy too? I've never actually seen one, but I have an old IBM Ps/2 Somewhere and it has 2.88 written on the eject button thingy

Yeah there was a 2.88 MB 3.5" floppy, but it was mostly used overseas, Japan I think.

There was also a 720k 3.5" floppy, if you really want to enumerate them all. And, there was even a 180k single-side, single-density 5.25". Now I don't know about the 8" disks, anybody want to give us those specs? LOL ;)
