Whats the difference

I've always used these two terms interchangeably "i.e." and "e.g" but I know there's a difference. What is it exactly?

i.e. = Id Est (Latin: That Is)

e.g. = Exempli Gratia (Latin: For Example)

ZV = Zenmervolt 😉

i have always associated i.e with "for example"
dunno about the other and i am prob off by a bit...

I would guess, based on nutten but feel that i.e. is when you say the same thing differently and e.g. is when you give examples.

A President who squanders a nations capital, i.e. pursues a political goal inimical to those of it's allies, e.g. as George Bush has trying to win support for a war in Iraq, does long term damage to the nation. ???

I've always thought of i.e. as 'in other words,' i.e. explaining something just said in a different way.
