What's the difference between Slot 1 and Slot 2?

I just configured an HTPC w/ components that I would like to use. The total is currently sitting at a cool $790 before shipping (I could probably save ~$50 if I ordered from the cheapest vendors)

Anyway, that's too much for me to justify spending on a winter break project right now. I do have a spare P3-700 CPU that's sitting around, and I'm thinking about picking up a secondhand motherboard and using that as a base for an HTPC. But I don't know if I should look for a slot 1 or a slot 2 motherboard. Were all P3's in Slot 2 or SECC packaging? And what is the difference between Slot 1 and 2 anyway??

Thanks Hanpan & LED.

FWIW, I tried the google and AT search shebangbangs before posting, but I didn't find anything that would definitively classify my particular processor.

And those p3's are Xeons.

Assuming your P3 is enclosed in a cartridge type of packaging (Black plastic cover and Intel hologram on one side, green circuit board with an edge of connectors on the other side), and the black plastic cover does not say "XEON," then you have a Slot-1.

If you have a Xeon, the black plastic cover should say "XEON."

If your CPU is the former, then you can get a late-model 440BX Slot-1 "Coppermine-ready" motherboard like the Abit BF6 and it will work.

HTH.
